mtzzJ5i iMtflagag3ffliaai tes. -- 7, Trfiwciwpi i v jpivf 1 COCONINO SUN. w THE STARRY BANNER. The Part It Now Plays In the Refular Ran tine of Every Arizona Scheal More Patriotism. Following' are extracts from an act of the last legislature concerning the purchasing of a flag, etc., and the dis playing thereof, in every school dis trict in Arizona: Sec. 1. It shall be the duty of the school authorities in the several school districts of the territory of Arizona to purchase a United States flag, flagstaff and the necessary ap pliances therefor, and to display such flag on or near the public school building during school hours, and at such other times as such school authorities may direct. Sec. 2. The said school authorities shall establish rules and regulations for the proper custody, care and dis play of the flag, and when the weather will not permit it to be otherwise dis played It shall be placed In the prin cipal room in the school house. Following are the Instructions of the superintendent printed on the face of the card and describing what will be considered the official and proper salute to the flag: "In compliance with the provisions of an act of the Twenty-second legis lative assembly of Arizona territory, approved March 13, 1003, entitled 'Patriotic Exercises in the Public Schools,' the following form of salute to tho flag has been prepared for the use of tho public schools of the terri tory: "On every school morning, when the Ischool has been called and the pupils seated, the entire school will, on a signal from the teacher, rise, stand erect in the aisle, facing the front of the room, and repeat the fol lowing: "'The Star Spangled Banner, long may it wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.' "Remain standing; bring tho open right hand, palm downward, to a hori zontal position against the forehead, immediately over the right eye (or as nearly so as practicable), and then drop the hand, open, to the side, and on a signal from the teacher, be seat ed. "Note A small flag above tho teacher's station would be appropri ate." It is explained that tho purpose of neither tho law nor tho officers is to bankrupt school districts buying flags. The nicer the flag the better, of course, and the more interest it will arouse, but any American flag is worthy of a salute at any time and place. It is not expected that small districts where the allowance for the yoar is scant will expend an unreasonable amount of money to comply with the law. If a good flag three or four feet long is hoisted on or near the schoolhouse it will be sufficient. The purpose of the law is not so much for decoration of the school houses as to teach patro tism and respect for the country's banner. Arizona boasts of the pa triotism of her people and wants to slay in the front rank with the nation al emblem floating over every institu tion for tho development of the young American idea. "These flags," says the superintendent, "should be put up as soon as possible and stay the whole year through." Bucklen'a Arnleet Salve. Has world-wide fame for marvelous cures. The Ganulna vs. Counterfeits. The genuine is always better than a counterfeit, but the truth of this state ment is never more forcibly realized or mora thoroughly appreciated than when you compare the genuine Do Witt's Witch Hazel Salve with the many counterfeits and worthless sub stitutes that are on the market. W. S. Ledbetter, of Shreveport, La., says: "After using numerous other reme dies without benefit, one box of De Witt' s Witch Hazel Salve cured me." For blind, blooding, Itching and pro truding piles no remedy is equal to DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve. Sold by D. J. Brannen. D. H. Burtis, of Phoenix, returned last week from a business trip east, and reports great interest there in the proposed Tonto reservoir improve ments. He thinks this winter will see a largo number of eastern visitors in Arizona and that during the next two years there will be a great influx of families from tho east to permanentely locate in the Tonto basin country.
