The Salt River Hekald is the most reliable newspaper in Arizona doubt the principal trouble there i is a total want of experience in the management of the crop, for other wise everything else is favorable. The southern half of California has a tropical climate and a genial soil, so that any crop will ripen there. If coffee culture can become permanent anl flourishing, the first aim of the San Francisco merchants will be to supply their own markets on the west coast. It will be a long time before the crop will be of any importance to the Atlantic States in competition w ith the pro ducts of Brazil, San Domingo, Java and Yeuezuehi, unless, indeed, things go oa much faster in Califor nia than there seems any prospect of. The State is not yet self-supplying in oranges and lemons ; great quantities being imported from the East Indies from which that State also receives its supplies of Ceylon and Java coffee. Oa the At lantic hide of the Republic coffee will ripen in Florida and Texas, but no progress hits yet been made wiih it there. Whenever the do mestic coffee interest becomes im portant, we shall hear a great deal less clamor for the imposition of a duty on the imported article. The Pkofit in Tree Planting. The question of preserving forests is year by year becoming one of great er importance in nearly every part of the civilized world. The well re cognized connection between the ex tent of forest lands and the ammmt of the annual rainfall brings the i:ii i .. suijecr. noine 10 even- mind. It is estimated that in this country 150,- 000 men are employed in getting out sawed lumber alone, and that the ciipital invested iu the business is $143,000,000. The woods of Maine arc fast diminishing, and the few trees that escape the lumber man's axe do not promise a revival of the almost trackless torest which the moose and deer once frequented. In 1S71, in Wisconsin, 10,000 acres were stripped to supply the city of Chicago with lumber. At this rate it is plain tn sec that forests are rapidly vanishing. Small Fkiits ix Gardens.
