During three trips which I have made through Arizona during the past twelve years, I have visited Tucson and the church of San Xavier del Bac each time, and have failed to discover accurately the date or circumstances of the settlement of this bright particular gem of this tar-oft" glittering landscape. Upon my last visit to the church of Still Xavier (this famous Mecca of all Arizona tourist and travelers), I saw manuscript chronological accounts of marriages solemnized under then ven erable roof of this sacred pile more than 130 years ago, and have other wise been made the recipient of in formation showing almost indisputa bly that Tucson was a settlement two hundred and thirty odd years ago. It is historically known that Tucson is nearly 200 years old ; that 100 years ago it was a military post, and con tained a population ot nearly 500 people, and that 00 years after it con tained at least 1,000 inhabitants. This population then became re duced, and in 1835 we find only about 400 people, mostly Mexicans. In I 1803, however, we may multiply full line of these last figures by three, and cor i rectly arrive at the number of inhab itants. And now we find Ltt.oijioi U1C ..iC.ML.nis li,L-U..lii.:;.:.L, nun c.il the hewers of wood and drawers of water, for your thrifty, migratory Hebrew has already a corner in everything of a mercantile character; the representative of dcr fadcrland is running a brewery; the much abused washee, washes nomad is running a laundrv, and either your high toned and self-sacrificing American or Irish man It rt:n:i!ny for ali the olliccs in ! e!.;':!iis ' peciall: iitiL-:ii..:;, a:;d in its transtormatiou re es IVoin ' twelve ;.!:.! fifteen years ag I aauiu-iiiiii town, I;ecr.ii:.t . The houses are nearly all one-story, although there arc several ) two-story structures, and, I believe, a I few of three stories. The population j must reach at least '5,000, and there were 5o!) votes cast at the late elec tion for delegate to congress. There may be as many, or more, .Mexicans as there arc people of other national ities, yet it does not seen: so to me. I am sure that there are more Ameri ca;! men, (classing all as Americans who are not Mexicans and Indians natives, etc., but the Mexican women greatly outnumber all others, while ol native parents, as (Jill I it I U 11 wi imii'i- I""1-'- thev range around the street corners look like strings of large dark beads; or, gathered together in courts, or in front of doorways, put oue in mind of collections of potatoes very small, generally, but many in a hill. The trade with I Sonora is wonderfully large, one firm ' alone doing a business with the I above-named Mexican state to an amount approximating half a mil lion dollars. Besides these, are lots of smaller stores, such as retail gre edy, variety, stationery, boot and shoe, apothecary, fruit and candy stores. There are two good hotels, ami a number of restaurants. Then there are saloons,-cigar stores anil barbershops sufficient to carry on a I till larger and more imposing nmni- ! cipaliiy. . There are several stables. I and as elegant a turnout, both as re- : , . , . . 1. pints Horses ana equipage, may ue procured in Tucson as in Los An geles or any other place in Southern California. A cathedral and other places or Catholic worship; a Presbyterian, church; several common schools; an institution of learning, under the auspices and management of the Sisters of St. Joseph, for girls, and a Catholic college for boys; also a public library; and last, but first in the dissemination ot general intelli gence, two bright, able and influen tial newspapers gives a clear'idea of the moral, religious and educational j leverage constantly brought to bear upon the stirring cosmooiitan peo ple of this marvel of a municipality. There are also a number of benevo lent societies, nnd all of the leading secret orders are honorably respected. ' There are the usual number of Mark ! smith, wagon, carpenter and otter j such kind of shops to be seen in any i town of 3,000 inhabitants. There is j also a brewery. I The climate is in many rcspecU like that of southern California, and, with the exception! ot chills and fever now and then, no finer ulimate and no greater degree of healthful ness can be found au3-vhere"in those parts of Europe, .s'a or America noted for their equability of temper ature. The seasons are defined in this part of Arizona as they are in California summer and winter. During the summer the weather is very hot, favoring diurnally the weather of climate or the Sacramen to or San Joaquin valleys. At night, however, it is excessively hot for several mouths, there not being fo great a fall of temperature as in Lho California valleys above named. The winter is a good deal like that of southern California, "with the differ, ence in favor of this section." The mercury ranges lower here at night than in any part of southern Ciili f -rma, and the necessity for parlor ! and library fires is greatcr.hcre than r.,i;(,;.K. l..litiM Rut .,,, ( n-,. month in and month out, excel anything, in its kind, I believe, in the world. A morning in winter at Tucson has no superior in all of the range of so called Italian climates. There Is an atmospheric lustre, so to speak, and. an elasticity of effect, that baffles any attempt at faithful description. j Frosts are frequent, but the silvery erustings are transformed into pearl j ur.i ai one shimmer of the rays ol i the imperial orb. 'ihe days arc 'then j warm and congenial throughout, i until Cynthia takes ou her sombre robe. i Oue would hardly think, after a few days intercourse with the people, that Tucson was one of the outer posts of civilization. For here, upon the very verge of the republic, and in the midst of savage scenes, may be seen as much polileuess and business integrity; more intelligence and hos pitality; and only a little less re ligion and moralitj" than exists in a Massachusetts town of the same pop ulation. A great many parties are given here dining a season, and es pecially when distinguished military men make Tucson a visit- The ladiea and gentlemen who get up"," and who otherwise parteipate w ith each other .,11 .,,..! .-iwit i tri if foti vi t ts ; " X Z" ." AVileox a short time ago (there were three given him in four days), and out of 57 gentlemen present all but five were in full evening dress, the claw hammers being as thick as at a Pal ace hotel hop. The ladies present numbered about 25, and if their dress, cs were not made at the White House in San Francisco, many of them most hf ve come from over the sea. Tito supper was as correctly (aud far more liberally) gotten up as any reception repast I ever saw in Washington, and champagne flowed as freely as tit any party I oversaw anywhere. So much for the manners and customs of the people of Tucson. Now, for mother classes nothing but good words can be written. On the whole, the society here is both worthy aud exemplary. The daily stage from the wst, when on time, leaves what is called Desert ; station about daylight for Tucson, bo tween 20 and 25 miles away. This Is exactly the right time to approach the city, as the effect of sunrise upon' the Cuiitinuxl on 'ecit Pny
