FINE FRUIT.
Delicacies that Should be Raised
in Salt River Valley.
Tho
Banana and
Apple.
Pine
Varieties, Mode of Plsntiuj,
General Information.
and
As Salt River Valley is adapted to
the culture of semi-tropic fruits, we
place before our readers the follow
ing suggestions written by a gentle.
man well versed in their culture:
Banana.
There are many varieties of the
bauuna. Some are very tends-- be
ing purely tropical, so as not to be
able to stand cold, much less frost.
The fine fruit which is brought here
and soid at tLe fruit stands is the
Chinese Dwarf. Very few of this
kind have fruited in California. The
Dwarf Cavendish is very similar,
lrm long cultivation in green houses,
lias come to endure cold better. The
fine flavored Dacca also, the fig ban
ana is a success in Florida and even
in Georgia. TheHelenaor Mountain
Sprout, of the Sandwich Islauds,
growing in the higher, cooler, re
gions, renders more frost, and general
ly fruits in Southern California.
Jut the r loriua Jlammotu some
times called horse banana. (I do not
know for what reason,) having long
been acclimated to the frosts of Flor
ida, seems best adopted to this cli.
male of nnv yet found. This was 12
years in r loriua Deiore H nesran to
bear. It. g-ows from 11 to 15 feet,
and almost every stalK bears, fruit
from 10 to 120 bananas to the stalk,
according to culture and climate. In
Southern California, I have known
the thermometor to go as low as 27J
several nights during the winter, and
ice 'brmed quarter of au inch thicK,
ami though all the leaves of the ban
anas were cut so as to droop and be
come as deait, yet as soon the weather
would become warm, they would
shoot new loaves from the top and
i grow on till Irvnt wrs r-errsct. Jhe
i banana belongs to to the lily family,
branches m She ground, shoors out
bulbs every three or four months,
which may be taken o!T and planted
to foim new stalks. Sometimes five
a year.
Pine Apple.
This is a delicious fruit but has
not succeeded yet in California in the
open ground. If it be treated as a
house plant, taken in during cold
weather, or covered with a glass put
over a box, with perhaps a little ma
nure around to warm a little it will
fruit nicely in about a year, or from
that to 13 months. On the coast of
Africa they may be taken from the
base of the fruit and grow and ripen
inside ot six months. If any wish
to add this delicious fruit to their
garden, I believe in this way they
can do so here in Phoenix. It crows
only three or four feet high, sends out
a still' stalk from the crown on which
grows the apple in the lonu ot a pine
core. It also branches trom the root,
aud forms there the strongest plant.
METHOD OF PLAXHSG.
Dig up the ground three feet across
mix in old rotten straw, or manure,
half and half with the dirt, set the
bulb iu the centre nearly a foot deep.
Keep pretty well soaked in warm
weather. In California one irriga
tion is sufficient. It is much w armer
here, that I would think once a week
would be better, as they would grow
wonderfully fast then, as here the
nights are warm. The Florida ban
ana, planted row or even bv the mid
dle of July, would altain a height of
six feet by cold weather, luey
might jrnw some duing the winter if
it was mild it would uted little culti
vation if planted thus, perhaps stir
ing and another dressicg of rotten"
straw in the spring.
PROTECTION.
I raise them in California as corn
planted ten or twelve feet one way
to give room to plow and cultivate
and four feet apart the other way,
they protect themselves a good deal
getting no protection otherwise.
I5ut at Phoenix, and Arizona general
ly, as it would be somewhat of an ex
periment, and people will not likely
plant many at first, they might be
planted in sheltered places, between
houses and walls, especially on the
south side, or where it is already
known to frost least. This might be
suflicient to protect them. Or they
might be wrapped up to the crown
with blankets, they grow up from
the ground underneath to much
moisture, which is much warmer
than the surrounding air, that being
wrapped, they would sutler notning
but. to lose tiuir long leaves. The
tender Chinese Dwarf might be cov
ered with a banel haviiicr the heads
out, and by piling stable manure
around the barrel, with moisture,
would make heat enough perhaps to
to keep them growing in the winter.
They grow but five or six feet to
fruit.
TIME OF FRUITING.
It takes them about two years to
fruit. The best. I have found is
Iweuty-two months, from planting a
bulb clear under the ground, to the
ripe Iruiton the plant- On the west
coast of Afiica, they fruit in from
nine to twelve months. They might;
possibly fruit sooner ' in Arizona, J
where they would grow so if ft 'n the j
Wiirai w-:'.";l.i r. This won id be dtttr. i
n,incil r,ii" hv tetiMn Wltifh IS Wl '
worth the" tri'al. It "is a bcautitul
plant, :iny way, btt-jrc tilt frosts, and
would be a pleasure to see growing
near houses all around. And if they
would fruit, would be a still greater
pleasure. A stalk bears but once. It
is well to cut it off near the ground,
when taking off the fruit, and by cut
ting in fine pieces uniting with the
soil to plant a new bulb, would nour
ish it with its own food. The fruit
should remain on the stalk till ripe, or
till some begin to turn yellow when
the whole bunch may be cut off a
foot or two below the fruit anil bung
up in the house to ripen, and be eat
en at pleasure.

- FLORENCE
We found everything very quiet. A
larger portion of the population is
Mexican and it is therefore difficult
to estimate its number, but to the
casual observer wc should estmale
the number in the neighborhood of
1000. It is the seat of Pinal county,
which naturally brtng3 it considera
ble business. It is the center of trade
of a large area of central and eastern
Arizona. In its immediate neighbor
hood is a large and fertile valley
some ntleen or twenty miles in length
by from three to eight miles in width,
that is well occupied by agricultur
ists, and where irrigation is practica
ble, most abundant crops, of every
thing grown in n semi-tropical or
temperate climates, are produced.
The town is well watered from nu
merous uccquias from the Gila, giv
ing opportunities for cultivating the
gardens and nourshing the miny
trees which have been planted alon.s:
the streels. These, with the streams
of water runniug through the streets
give an air cl coin i or t ana cueertui
ness that render this town very at
tractive. The principle stores are kept by J.
Collingwood & Co., J. Guindanni fc
Co. and Buckalew & Ochoa. This
latter firm will shortly move into
more, commodious quarters, the larg
building of J. C. Loss being refitted,
tor them. The Cosmopolitan Hotel
is kept by Mr. Bilike, aud is not sur
passed by uny institution of the kind
in the Territory. The saloon and all
the other kiuds of business are well
represented.
A few hours ride brought us to
PICKET POST.
A village containing a population
bout as large as Florence, and with
a great deal more life than that place.
The backhone of this place at present
is the Silver King Mining Company.
Pans and fcettlers are being put in po
sition in their mill and in a short
time will be in working order. Years
ago, during Indian times. Gen. Stone
man had his headquarters at Pinal
Kanch and established an out-post 'a
Queen's Creek. Little was thtn
known of the mineral wealth' that
slumbered bcnealh the gronnd. The
town at present rate of progress will
be larger than Florence in a short
time. The business men are all lib
eral and enterprising and' anticipate
a bright future. The town is sup
plied with barber, butcher, brewery,
saloons and stores, assay oflBce and
blacksmith shop. Goldman & Co.

This is the outfitting point for the

with strangers and much activity ami
bustle is seen on every hand. We
