THE PHCEXIX HERALD
SEMI-WEEKLY EDITION.
Saturday. June 23. 1871.
Forty Years Hence.
The San Francisco Bulletin after
speaking of the past thus talks of 'the
luture.
Forty Tears hence, and what? The
Derian canal will be one of the great
hiehwavsot commerce, stearn will
be applied still more economically to
ocean transportation. Li mis gaineu
almost a hundred per cent, in cncap
ness and effectiveness in the last ten
vears. There will be half a dozen
lines of railroad across the continent.
Haifa dozen or more great cities
will be located along the coast one
at least in Alaska, one or two on
Fueet Sound, another on the Colum
bia, one possibly midway between
the moulh of that river and San Fran
cisco, another down the coast, possi
bly at San Diego, and another on the
Gulf ef California, perhaps at Guay
mas. There will be a great midway
city between the Missouri and the
Pacific coast, perhaps at Salt Lake,
or at some other point still more fav
orable for trade. The City of Mexico
will be Americanized and made a
great railway centre, and the mining
interests south of the Colorado will
be vastly more important than any
that have been developed north of the
line.- The centre of population will
have gone far west of the Missouri
river, being at the expiration of that
time Dot far from the base of the
Kocky Mountains. The fisheries and
the great lumber region of the JCorth
. west will be in and about Alaska, a
country just now little esteemed, in
tact, deemed of too little consequence
for an organized territorial Govern
ment. The redwood forests will have
entirely disappeared, and both sides
of the Sierra will have been denuded
for mines, quartz mills and railroads.
Here and there will be small forests
which have been planted and culti
vated by private enterprise. The
coal and the timber will come down
from the north ; copper and iron ore
will come from the same region.
Js'ew Orleans will be nearer to San
Francisco in point of time, than Salt
Lke is to-day. Currents of trade
will have changed. The merchant
on this side of the country will not
go to the other side to buy goods.
All military roads once led to Rome.
All commercial roads on this contin
ent will finally lead to San Francisco
at least that is the logic of events
as we now forecast them for the next
half century.
TO THE XORTII POLE.
No greater interest probably has
ver been taken in any expedition
from the United States toward the
Pole than that now felt in the propos
ed voyage of the Jeannette, the 6team
yacht of James Gordon Bennett, now
"lying at Mare Island, Cal., prepara
tory to settiDg forth on her voyage to
the North. There are some features
connected with the enterprise that
make it peculiar. The expedition is
a private enterprise, but by special
acts of Congress, the vessel is mann
ed by officers of the United States
Navy and allowed all the rights and
privileges of a Government ship. By
a similar Act of Congress, the vessel
which is a British hull, having been
bought in England by Mr. Bennett,
was allowed to sail undcr American
colors and assume a new name, being
originally named the Pandora. Her
course, too, will be different from that
hitherto taken by'any vessel designed
for a voyage of scientific exploration.
All other expeditions in search of the
open Polar Sea have been by way of
Baflins Bay. The Jeannette will be
the first vessel to pass Behring Strait,
on a purely explorative voyage to
ward the Korth Pole. There have
been several previous voyages to the
Arctic by this route, but the object in
these instances was the discovery ot
Sir John Franklin and not the explor
ation of an unknown portion of the
globe.
