t L IlillD Peralta, The Largest, Best Immense New THE PHCEX1X HERALD. HiKJil-W K K K I-Y V. IITIOX. Wednesday. July 23. THE, AZTLAN MILL BURNED. Supposed Act of an cendiary- tn- EcUvccn 10 ami 11 o'clock Friday night, persons in rrescolt ob.-crrt'd great columns of. flume and smoke ascending skyward, from a point about five miles south of town, ex actly in the direction of the Aztlan mill. Some peodc guessed that the mill was on fire, while others sup posed that the timbar, or brush pile, or something else, was destroyed The matter was settled this morning by the arrival of a messenger from the scene of the conflagration, with news of the total destruction of the mill consisting of houses, ten stamps, a full complement of pans, settlers, boilers, steam engine, tc, all of the value of $12,000. The mill has had an eventful career. Erected by JToyes aud Cur tis In 1866, to work the Upqua lode it was afterwards moved to the Chase mine, then to Groom creek, w here it s now in ruins. The Peck Company owned and run it for several years past and it was, really, under their management, the first successful bullion-maker in this part of the Territorj-. During Peck family feuds, it was now held by Mr. Ed. G. Peck: then Mr. C. C. Bean, who we believe, recently trans ferred it to a New York Company, of which he is Ag-ent. Messrs. Bean, Peck, Opdyke and others arc now out, endeavoring to find out whether or not the fire u-as accidental. The general belief here is that some mis creant set it on fire. If so, all ol our people hope that his discovery, cap ture and punishment will shortly be 'accomplished. Hanging would be -too good for lUe author of such a crime. Believing that Mr. Bean still own d the mill, true sympathy was every where expressed for him, for, be it JmoB-n,"- that he is one of Arizona's most persevering business man. A man who has yet never said fail and w ho has often turned defeat into vic tory. Its loss will be felt by the miners of Groom Creek and other districts, who have a great deal of rich ore piled at their mines, which Mr. Bean was going to work. A re ward of 1,000 is offered for the devil who caused the loss. 3Ir. Bishop-, watchman at the mill, was asleep when the flames broke out. Arizonin'n. MINING MATTERS.
