A little over two weeks aga a man stated .to have 'been from Las Ve gas was murdered west of Silver City. He was driving a black burro which carried his supplies. The body was dragged some distance up an arroyo and left there. The murderer is sup posed to have taken the burro and luggage. The deceased was about twenty-five years of age, five feet eight inches high and had red hair. A watch safe key and knife which were found may lead to the identifi cation of the body. Lincoln county items are genorally tragical. They Etill continue to kill people in that section. John Tones who killed John Beck with wa3 him self shot and killed. Clmgtr is the man who is supposed to have killed Jones. He was killed at Pierce & Paxton's ranch. A num ber had eolected there. Jones came up and was shot: just how is not dffiuitely stated. He was shot six or tight times. Pierce was also shot through the hips and is expected to to die... Jesse Evans is under arrest at Fort Stockton for killing Tom Jones. Charles Adams, special agent of the post office department came in from Denver on the Thursday morn ing's train and put himself in com munication with officials here and the detective who has been working "p the case.- Webb was one of the proprietors of the saloon on Center Street where he was arrejted and was dealing keno when colarcd. It is reported that he was terribly scar ed, and that he was really wanted t n a charge of having been engaged in a murder in Texas. The men bear ing the euphonious tille? of B S Jack and Slap Jack Bill, the pride of the Pan Handle, are gamblers who came from Otero some weeks ago. They are originally from Texas and are classed as teugh citizens. A good deal of sympathy is expressed for Webb by men who knew him and they uniformly express the opinion that he is not guilty of the stage rob. bery. Bat Mr Parker identific'3 him as the man who hired the buggy the evening of the robbery. Mr. Sander eon of company also identifies one of the men as being present on that ex citing occasion. The officers who made the arrest evidently understood their business all they took their men withont creating any confusion, the prisoners were kept at the hotel all uight and ia the morning started for Santa Fe for a hearing in the United States Courts. J B. Harris, foreman of the ma terial yard at the depot, reports ties, rails, spikes, bolts, etc., su flic it tit to lay sixteen miles of tractt. and also Trridge material sufficient for the next fifty miles. As soon as the tun nel is open the accumulation will rapidly increase. Track laying will be commenced again in about two weeks. Messrs. Griffith and Lowther of the Construction department of fhe railroad", went up to the. tunnel yesterday morning to arrange for lay. i'ng the track through, and arriving there, telegraphed for men and ma terial, A train was at once fitted out and sent back, and it is probable the hands wiH commence at once to l:.y the iron track through the Raton Moun tails. The completion of the tunnel will enable the road to re. duce the running time on the road by several hours. Tire cars will come through fromt La Junta on the Arkansas river without tlvterf tion. The Empire of India ia IVavftur a tough time of it in Afhaniotau. The native troops at Herat have revolted aud massacred the civil ami military authorities. The Zulu war is just over, aud now England has her hands full w ith that Afghanistan rebellion. When native troops revolt aud kill a lot of Englishmen or when Eng land's foes slaughter, a few British officers, it is a terrible massacre. When British troops kill Afghun and Briii.h hird savages run down and murder Zulus, tUtit i- v.;irf:irc . F. Ht-j!; It-port. Chinese Cities. tn Eastern The Xcw York Herald, in a re cent article on the Chinese in Xuw Vork, ztutes there are besides 300 laundries, 50 Chinese groceries, 20 tobacconists and 10 druggists, with enough Mongolians in other callings to demonstrate the adaptibility of the race. In 1675 there were only one hundred and fifty seven Chinese iu New York, but the next year will show many thousands. Ia Jersey City there are three factories which employ Chinese labor alone. One of theta ia a shirt factory, another a shew factory, and the last an es tablishment for the manufacture of cheap cutlery. It is said that a beer saloon has been opened in Hoboken by two Chinamen. In Brooklyn there are about fifty laundries, six cigar stores and one grocery. From statistics furnished by the most intel ligent and best informed of these people, the population of 2 ew York has received an addition of 2,500, in cluding two females. The Chinese residents of Brooklyn number over 230, and two feruak'3. Jersey City (and LI'-'bokea Liive about two Uua- dred. About ten per cent of these I arrived in the city from Havana, the rest came overland from Califor n'a. Over ninety-five per cent, of the Chinese population are regularly en gaged in some honorable calling. Every few days the San Francisco Companies send out a batch of about a hundred Chinamen. About fifty of these come to JS'ew York, twenty to Boston, and twenty to Philadelphia. The rest scatter to other cities. The article further declares that the Chinese, have purchased lots in sev eral cemeteries including Green wood. Thev are marrying extens ively, generally Irish women, and a China. Celtic generation is spring, ing up. A Mixed Litter. Yesterday afternoon we were shown the result queer freak of aa ture at George Bailies Burton Ale Saloon First street. Mr. Charles Barr, who owned the place for a number of years, had in his posses sion for a long time a very large Maltese cat. She had had several litters of kittens in a certain room back of the saloou. Though op posed to dogs of all kinds, the cat in question became very familiar with a half black.and tau and half grey hound dog kept on the place. On the 4th inst. the cat gave birth to a litter of eight young ones. A few hours after, upon investigation, ii was discovered tiiat three of the new comers were pups, and the other five kittens. The kittens were per fect, aud with the exception of the ears on the dogs resembled those of kittens, and the feet of the latter be ing somewhat like those of kittens, the dogs are also remarkably perfect. There is no doubt about their mater nity, and so far the mother indicates a decided preferance for one of the pnps, the favorite being jet black, and the other two dogs being mouse colored. San. Jose 1 imes. Military JIatters. Lieutenant-Colonel Robert S. La Motte, Twelfth Infantry, having re ported for duty ia this Department, is assigned to t'e command of Whip, pie Barracks, Preseott. Fort Yuma, Oal., thence by rail to Benicia Barracks, Ca.1., reporting its arrival by tele graph to the Assistant Adjutant Gen eral Military of the Pacific. Fasa it Ai'onnd. Splendid advice is this from the New York Miuing Record: Our con temporaries in the mining districts may do a special service to the tnin inr industry of the country by a flat footed exposure of the facta as they actually are, whensoever they see published here any favorable notice of a mining enterprise based upon property in their respective vicinities, which may be known at home as lacking substantial meri'.or to be without the development or plant Claimed for it. Invariably when a mining property without genuine value has been put upon the Eastern market, so soon as the bubble bursts the reputation of the district in which it was located suffers, and, as a consequence, r ally good mines thereafter, from that quarter suffer from it, and meet little or no con sideration.
