Adams'
deavors to make her understand that
the mere fact of having been able to
please such an august personage was
happiness itself, was in vain; en
treaty and expostulation met with no
better success, and it was only
through the stratagem of having the
clown,who was regarded by natives
with a great deal of veneration, act
as my father and prc-emptorily for
bidding the marriage. The matter
was finally compromised by my ac
cepting the lady as a present, to the
evident satisfaction of the Queen.
I afterwards presented the woman to
the wife of an American sea captair,
who brought her to Boston, and suc
ceeded, as I have siuce learned, in
making a Christian aud civilized be
ing out of her. On our way home
from Otahciti, through the careless
ness of our captain we were wrecked
off the coast of South America, and
were forced to take - to the boats,
but succeeded, after suffering great
hardships, in reaching Callao, and
from there worked our way back to
the States, through Mexico.
