In accordance w ith his announce ment in Friday's Daily 'Herald, Mr. D. W. Jones delivered a lecture on. the faith of ths L itter Day Saints, i:i the District Court room, yesterday morning After a few preliminary remarks, Mr. Jones opened by saying: Among all nations.all scieties and ail people there is a certain system of order, combined more or less with certain ceremonies, which must be ! complied with before certain rights and privileges can be received. For ex ample among all nations.even the most barbarous, some formality has to be gone through before one can become entitled to the rights and privileges incident to citizen.-hip. The neces sity of formality is also fully recog nized by the Christian world, in its universally requiring a baptism of water, in some form, as a sigu of the renunciation of an old life of sin, and the entering on a new life in Christ. Similar to other societies the Church of the Latter Day Saints has its forms of initiation or adoption iuto its fold. These forms were, as was the baptism oi waier, iiesiguaieu oniy uy me ljOrci, as- irom iiieir very vancctiiess they could not have been the produc tion of man. Why these forms were especially designated as being re quisite to be gone through can no more be explained than can the selec tion of the baptism of water for the purpose of representing a cleansing from sin- As the latter is univer sallv accented throughout Christen dom, so are the former bv the Latter D:l., saint, a:ld i,ave, therefore", be i come tenets ot our faith which can no more be dispensed with than can the baptism of water. They are as strongly interwoven iuto our faith as I is polygamy or any other of our doc trines All nave emanated Horn an ! equally divine source, and, therefore, ! to abandon one would be as fatal as i. The reason is that we cannot have revela tions lo suit ourselves. They come from a higher sourc e than ever w.13 Brigham Young or any other man on f:irl1i Tn lirr-tpnd sm-li a tiling would be liypocracv of the bases! kind. Polygamy is too sacred to trilled with; among us are mat y men who have retrained from enter ing into it for the sole reason that they have doubted their ability to live up to its requirements. In conclusion Mr. Jones said that he had made these remarks 1:1 order .hat the people of this Territory mijiht sec the kind of people they were. Some of them, among whom he wm one, had come into this Territory ami settled.
