He Talks With Dark-Eyed Senoritas. CORBKSPOKDEXCX OT THS HERALD. Mteiis' District, November 1, 1879. ) Through the columns of the Her ald a word concerning southwestern Arizona, might be of interest to your many readers. Looking over the map the eye will rest upon the name of the famous Ajo Copper mine, which, in the primitive days of min ing in Mexico, was extensively WOKUED BY THE JESCIT8. Its numerous shafts, tmnels, build ings, smelters and corrals, still at test the enterprise and activity of the olden times. The decline of cop per, and the lack of the proper kind of machinery, rendered it too expens ive to parties some few years ago, but on the advent of railroads, we may look forward in the near future to see It again placed among the bo nanzas of Arizona. Twenty miles further brings us to the famous Gun sight miue. The marvel of the south west, a mine which ttough only known to a few, will yet become the - COMSTOCK OF ARIZONA. The Company have refused to re bond the mine for $200,000, and are shipping ore that runs into the thous ands. In the same group of granite mountains many locations have been made. Among the foremost is the Mala Peis Giant, a vein of carbonate ore containing free gold, the prop erty of Harris and Jones, the former of Washington, the latter an old timer and prospector. These gentle men are making arrangements to have a mill shortly in operation. A mine, known as the Blue Bird, owned by Fred W all and Berks of Berks Station, is a remarkable combination of ores, as different assaj-s show it to contain: tcllerium of gold, silver, and platinum in paying quantities. Reports say the mine has been bonded to Eastern capitalists. The Paymaster has been sold for $20,000 Ere a year passes, we predict a thriving town on the present site of Papago, and Humboldt's prophecy verificd, that this part of Arizona would one day St"rri.T THE WOULD WITH BULLION. Thirty miles westerly are the Ouita Bacquita mines operated by Chicago capital and superintended by Mr. Waterman. We pass on and find ourselves over the line and a few hours ride brings us up to Sen oita. Here we have an oppornity to air our fragments ofSpanish to dark-eyed Senoritas, and accepting of their hospitalities we seat our selves around the proverbial rawhide and partake of the luxuries id est Toli and goat's milk. All our vis ions of .sentiment disappear with that plate of Toli; we want none of it in ours. Forty miles southward is San Anton, formerly occupied by Mexi cans and Indians, who placered and arastrad it in their primitive way but now the thud of the stamp mill and the boom of the blast re-echo that CHICAGO ENTERPRISE Has forced its way westward. Far up on the mountain side the eye can trace the golden ledge that for years has washed its treasure into tl.e Gulf. Henceforth it shall find lis way into the busy marts of the world to take its place among the gods of man. Out West. HOTEL ARRIVALS. Phoenix Hotel J Gardiner Prop. W m Griffith, AT A J Sawyer, 111. We have no means now of even ap proximating the amount of sugar consumed by our people, but if the facts were definitely known, they wouid be simply surprising. It would be found that it was one of the heaviest items in the cost of liv ing. It is a trade also that is meas ureablv a dead loss, because it is one in which there is very little profit to our merchants. All staple goods of that nature are sold at such i small margin necessarily, that they hardly pay the dealer for the handling. Of all the importations that we find nec essary, goods of this class are the heaviest drain on the resources of our Territory. As we said some time slaco iu an article on horticul ture, the community which ezports most and iinporte least is the one which becomes wealthy the quickest. As we desire to retain our wealth among our own people, we ought to produce everything that can be rais ed at home for consumption, rather than depend on resources from abroad which drain our resources from within. From the standpoint of political economy, therefore, the production of sugar ought to enter into our industrial plans, as one of the very first importance. We should neglect nothing that would relieve us of dependence on our neighbors. Arizona comes nearer being a world of resources within itself than any other country we have ever known. And among its products there is none that would be a source of profit to the producer, or a greater saving to the people at large than the produc tion of this indispcnsible article of produce and consumption. In anoth er article we shall consider the sub ject from a manufacturing stand point. " C-KSABIH-H." The New York Herald which pro fesses to be neither Republican or Democratic, as to politics, seems to be filled with a Yagus fear of the word at the head of this article, when Gen. Grant's name is men- tioncd for the Presidency. Now we are not of those who believe Gen. Grant is the only salvation of this country, and we are free to say that we prefer some other man even for 1880. But we do not share the feel ing of alarm, that seems to be enter tained by the Herald and others of Gex. Grant or "any other man," be coming to this Republic what Csesar was to Rome. In this country the people are the King- A man may by his military or political services become great, but he can never be come quite ag big as the people The nation hold these men to be their servants instead of their masters, and the man who would assume to be come dictator in any sense, would find himself pulled down from his throne in twenty-four hours. We have no fears of Cxsarism on the one hand or communism on the other. The people of this nation determine the questions ot intcrett, and mark cut the lines of policy to be followed by our so-called rulers, and when a man is asked as President to execute the will of the people, and dares to substitute his own will, he finds very soon that there is a greater than Caesar behind the throne, and we are j surprised that so able a paper as the New York Herald can be frightened by such a shadow.
