NEW SERIES No. SO. nr Pwci ill El K .AJLIX JL WHAT 1AE "HqRALD" WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. Why some 'well informed Dc mo crat diesn't explain awaj' the charges made by the Grand Jury against Lemoa, their candidate for District Attorney? Also those arainst the Board of Supervisors one of whom is a can dida'.e for Recorder? Was the reDort calculated to in spire confidence in their honesty? And was Lively the embodiment of that honesty? Why did George Buck resign ? Wasn't he always in a helpless minority? If Lemon wasn't Republican when he taught school in San Diego county three years ago? Acd-if his change of opinion was caused by inflated reports of Demo cralic majorities ia this county. Why the Expositor keeps printing the lie that Kelly lives ia Oakland and has no property here? Hadn't it better skin it? Whv Baker said in his speech to the Mormons that he would not in terfere with their "peculiar institu tion" if he were elected; and on the contrary promised to oppose any measure introduced against polyg amy? If John Gerge will exact-a bond from his deputy, if elected? Why the Democrats keep working so hard, if they are so sure of wining? Why the Candidates of the Demo cracy are trading each other off? What they're got against Orme? If the Rev-Major-Judge Cox will realize $J29 from the sale of his "Coxonian System of Spelling?" If he will not have on the title page this motto; "krist cuddent spell liie ME, suh!" If the Demo; rats arc not sorry they paid the Expositor $590 for the poor help rendered, this campaign? Why they havn't suppre.-sed f.e Expositor it having hurt the can didates more than their own records? Our j- and his Work. Mr. Wilkerson reports that portion of (Uf coanty rapidly filling up with settlers. Six families are already over there, and three more were met going; in. Twenty-two children will a' tend school over there this winter. The people have no mail facilities, the nearest postofliccs b.-ing Verde or McDowell, 60 miles distant. There is couside: able farming land in ihe Basin, and good crops have been rait-ed the past years. Mr. Wil kerson laid on our laole a monster potato that had raised on the ranch of Mr Ike Lothian. It weighs six pounds, and we think it ahead or anything in that line yet raised in the Territory. Mr. Lothian has several large bins of this "fruit," averaging from one pound up to six. 1 lie outlook in the lonto country is certainly cheering, and we lcok for a large and prosperous camp i;i that section in a short time. Demo crat. Q'jitea laughable sig-ht occurred . in tront of Meyer's rlrnj store, in Tucson, yesterday. The old stone sc its, orsliields, by the door, have long been used as a resting plnce for the weary lounger. The Doctor, who is always up to the times, had -these old stone seats encased in wood yesterday, and to-day tliey received a coat of paint; one was labelled p.-rfumery" and the other "medi- ciiiei." A "Latly Washington supper" and social, for the benefit cf the Presby terian Church will be held Thursday evening, JNov. 4, at Ventwortlis Hall. Admission to the Hall free We have received a copy of the life of the man who will be elected, Tuesday, President of the United States for the next four years Gene ral James A. Garfield. It is written by Major J. M. Bunlcy, editor of the New York Evening Mail, and pub lished by A. S. Barnes & Co., New York. The illustrations show his birthplace, at fourteen 3-ears of ago, when he followed the tow path for a living, and others. It commences with his ancestry and slops with his nomination at Chicago. Arguments a la "Expositor." Prescott, Oct. 27. Editor Hekai-d: The following weighty points have been made b; the Expositor during the campaign, against M. H.Sherman, candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruct ion. They should be sufficient, with any fair minded man, to consign Mr. Sherman to political oblivion. About the middle of June he was charged with parting his hair in the middle. This was bud, but in a later issue the stili more crushing charge cat e that he did not part i a' all. Th.r ting for blood, his relentless reisecutors, in a still later issue and with the election fast approaching, made the cruel assertions that he iiad "A smile that was child like and bland." And again he was charged with "being ou the fence." Now, Mr. Editor, it is plain that if these charges are true, Mr. Sherman is not a fit man to centred the inter ests of our public schools. Had the editor of the Expositor lived in Prescott, he would know that t: ese a e not the only te ious charges against Mr. Sherman. Why, sir, lie i:T3 tjeerr Known tO Cft lrcano right here in Prescott! This alone should disqualify him for holding any office of trust or emolument. The sm: llness of his menial calibre is evident from the fact that he has been seen reading the Expositor under the delusion that he was read ing news. It is impossible that the loyal voters of Arizona will trust a man who thus certifies to his own idiocy. Asain, he is considered ver' reck less by many who know him in Pres cott. He has a way of going through the streets like a s-team engine, thus endangering the lives of small child, ren. This wo consider a more seri ous charcethan any brought forward by the Expositor. Any man who will endanger the live? of children is cer tainly unfit to lake charge of our public schools. Now, Mr. Editor, we submit these additional charges with the hope that they will be copied by the Expo sitor and given a wide circulation. The idea is quite prevalent through out the Territory that Mr. Sherman has worked faithfully in building up our public school system. There are hundreds of Democrats in Pres cott and vicinity who intend to vote for him on this ground. But we feel sure that if all the foregoing charges should be put together by the Expo sitor end fired off at a single shot just before tLe election, it would blow the "Religious Professor's'' political head off. A word to the wise is sufficient. A. CARU. Phceik, A. T., Oct. 20th, 1830. A. C. Baker, Eq, riia-nir, A. T. Sir: Last night, at Ternpe, I charged you, and through vou tl e legislative candidates on the Demo. cratic ticket, with having promised the Mormons of this counly, in a speech, at Mesa City, to protect them in their practice ot polygamy,if they would suppoit and help to elect the ticket. Whic'i you first denied and afterwards confirmed by sending a greeting to the Mormons of Mesa City promising not to interfere with their religion, one of the principal tenets of which is polygamy. Now the people have a right to know whether or not you would oppose the passage of a law having for its object the suppression of polygamy in our mid3t; or whether you will carry out your pledge to the Mormons to pro tect them if the matter was brought up iii the legislature. SlIEIiSIAS. How a Married Woman Cioes to Birep. There is an artiele going the rounds entitled "How Girls Go to Sleep." The manner in which they go to sleep, according to the article, can't hold a-candle to the way a mar ried woman goes to sleep. Instead of thinking what she should have at tended belore going to bed, she thinks of it afterward. While she is revolving these matters in her mind, and while snugly tucked up in bed. the old man is scratching his legs in front of the fire place, and wondering how he will pay tli e next month s rent- Suddenly she says. "James, did you lock the door?" "Which door?" says Jim. "The cellar door." she says. "No," says James. "Well, you had belter go clown and lock it, for I heard something in the back yard last night." Accordingly, Jim paddles down stairs and locks the door. About the time James returns and is going to get into bed, she remarks: "Did you shut the stair door?" "No," said James. "Well, if it is not shut the cat Aill get up into the bedroom." "Let her come up, tnen, says James, ill naturedly. "My goodness, no, returns the wife; "she'd suck the baby's breath." Then James paddles down stairs ngaio. and steps on a tack and closes the stiir door, and curses the cat and returns to the bedroom. Just as he begins to climb into his couch his wife observes: "I forgot to bring up some water Suppose you bring up some in the big tin?" And so James with a muttered curse goes down into the dark kitchen and falls over a chair and rakes all the tin-ware on the wall iu search of the "big" tin, and then jerks the stair door open and howls: " lieretne deuce are tne matches? She gives him minute instructions where to find the matches, and adds that she would rather go ucd get the water herself than have the neigh borhood raised about it. After which James finds the matches, procures the water, comes up stairs and pre pares to retire. Before accomplish ing this teat Ins wife suddenly re member that she forgor to chain the dog. A trip to the kennel follows. and he once more jumps into bed. Presently his wife says: "James, let's have an understand ing about money matters." Now, next week I've cot to pav " I don't knu w hut yuu'lt liave to pav. and J don t care, shouts James as he lurches around and jams hi". face against the wall; ' all 1 want now is sleep." Uial s all very well for you. snaps his wife, as she pulls the cover viciously; "you never think of the won-v and trouble I have." Parniins Under the Sea. Everywhere upon (lie coast of East ern Xcw England may be found, ten feet below the water mark.the lichen known as carragreen the "Irish moss" of commerce. It may be torn from the sunken rock3 anywhere, and yet the little seaport of Scituate is almust the only place in the coun try where it is gathered and cured. This village is the great center of the moss business in the country, and the entire Union drags its supplies from these beaches. Long rakes are used in tilling this marine farm, and it does not lake long to fill the many dories that await the lichen, torn from i's salty rock bed. The hus bands and fathers gather the moss from the sea, and the wives and daughters prepare it for the inaket Soak it in water and it will melt awf-y to a jelly. Boil it in milk and a delicious white and creamy blauc mange is the result. The annual product is from ten thousand to fif teen thousand barrels, and it brings 15.000 into the town, which sum is shared by one hundred and fifty fam ilies. Its consumption in the manu facture of lager beer is very large, and the entire beer of the country draws its supplies from Scituate beaches, as the importation from Ireland has almost ceased. It is not generally known that the moss, as an article of lood.is called "sea mass farina." lie was a Lnnd new office boy, young, pretty-faced, with golden ringlets and blue c-3'es. Just such a boy as one would imagine woud be taken out of his trundle bed in the middle of the night and tran sported beyond the Etars. The first day he glanced over the lib rary iu the editorial room, became acquinted with everybody, knew all the printers, and went home in the evening as happy and cheery as a sunbeam. The next day he ap peared, leaned out of the back win dow, expectorated on a bald-headed printer's pate tied the cat up by the tail iu the hallway, had four fights with another boy, borrowed two do'lars from an occupant of the building, saying his mother was dead, collected his two days' pay from the cashier, hit the janitor with a broomstick, pawned a coat belonging to a member of the edi torial staff, wrenched the knob off the doors, npsc t the ice cooler, pied three galleys of type, and smashed his fingers on the little press. On the third day a note was received, saying: "My mother do not want I to work in such a dull place She says I would make a good preacher: so do I. My finger is better; gone fishin'.
