THE PAS, Man., Jan. 24.—Leading
[ dog drivers in the 200-mile derby to
be run here February 3, have threat
ened to withdraw unless the proposed
course along the Hudson Bay railway
to Herb Lake and return is abandoned.
“We think too much of our dogs to
risk their lives in such a brutal way,”
the drivers declared. They said the
course as laid out was “very treach
erous.”

SAN FRANCISCO last night woke
up feeling “foggy” and wirelessed to
the world of the intense cold of
Fairbanks, Alaska, which started on
Saturday and which caused the post
master of the U. S. postoffice to
abandon the task of distributing the
mail, owing to the fact that the ^ero
weather prevailing numbbed his fin
gers beyond useage. The weather in
Fairbanks registered 65 degrees that
day, but reports coming fronj the in
terior today state that it is moderat
ing some and all business has again
took on its normal stride. Now' Al
aska should broadcast ’Frisco w'eath
er, wiiich is usually shrouded by a
dense fog about “25” hours a day.
We fear the people w'ould soon tire
| of ’Frisco weather reports.

Widespread Appeal
Sought In New Film
Made In Germany

BERLIN, Jan. 26.—German, Eng
lish and American capital has unit
ed to produce an international film,
the story and the treatment of which
will ensure popularity in all import
ant countries of the world. The pur
pose is to increase salability by mak
ing a universal appeal.
The film is called “The City of
i Temptation,” and it is being taken
under the giganitc glass sheds that
at one time were used by the avia
j tors of former Emperor William.
jTen nations are represented in the
! colony of actors, producers, photog
raphers, directors and writers en
gaged in the work.
The film is a development from a
story of Sir Philip Gibbs, who is per
sonal)- assisting in the production. It
centers about Constantinople and
! shows the tragedy of Russia refugees
who crowded the Turkish capital
without funds four years ago when
the movements in South Russia
against the Bolshevist armies failed
and all non-Bolshevists were com
pelled to flee.
Miss Julianne Johnson, of Los An
geles, has the leading role in the
film, that of a Russian girl who was
compelled to support herself and four
aged father by dancing in one of
the cabarets of the Turkish capital.
Mile. Chekova, a niece of Chekov, the
celebrated Russian novelist and play
wright, also fills a prominent role as
one of the Russian princesses who
were compelled to become waitress
es in Levantine cafes.
Walter Niebuhr, of Los Angeles, is
directing the film, and Malcolm Todd
and several other English actors are
playing the roles of Englishmen.
There are a number of German ac
tors in the cast, where all the Scan
dinavian countries and most of the
Balkan states are represented. The
Turkish minister here and other mem
bers of the Turkish legation have
been called into conference in the
production, and have attended the
staging of many of the scenes.

street scenes of Constantinople had
to be staged in a shed so immense
that it is impossible to heat it. Con
sequently attendants are kept busy
supplying hot water bags and fur
coast to actresses when they are not
actually before the camera in their
summery costumes.
British Cotton Mill Boom
Finds Lack of Operatives

MANCHESTER, Jan. 26.—Some
thing of a transformation is happen
ing in the Lancashire cotton trade,
which has been under a cloud of de
pression since the great boom of a
few years ago. Looms which stood
idle for many months are being run
again, and on looking round for op
eratives to work other looms, manu
facturers find they have migrated
to other industries. This necessitates
the adoption of methods hitherto for
eign to the trade, and unknown to he
oldest weaver.
Children leaving school are induced
immediately to enter the weaving
sheds, and not only learn the busi
ness but are paid for it, while older
weavers get extra pay to teach the
youngsters the craft. As in almost
every other big industry nowadays,
employees interest does not halt with
teaching the trade to youngsters,
they are encouraged to attend munici
pal colleges for technical training so
that when the next big boom arrives
the trade will be in an efficient state
to cope with it.
