ALL OFF WITH UGLY SIGNS ON FLORIDA ROADS f Ry Associated Press) TALLAHASSEE, Florida, Jan. 27.— A movement to eliminate unsightly signs from along the public highways in Florida, started in Lake county, two years ago, has spread so rapidly that 21 of the 63 counties in the state have established regulations prohibit ing any signs on public highways ex cept those placed there by authority of the county or state as definite guides. The Florida Development Board, which is the state chamber of Com merce, began IS months ago a move ment to coordinate throughout the state and help to crystallize sentiment favoring conservation of scenery. Fol lowing elimination of the unsightly signs, county commissioners have or ganized in 17 counties to beautify the roads. Now a movement is spreading to j replace the road signs with shrubs and ; flowers in certain locations; else- ! where it is being urged upon the 1 county and satte authorities that steps be taken toward the conservation of natural growth along the public high ways where a roadway is under con struction and that rightofways 100 feet wide be set aside on the princi pal highways. Agitation for the conservation of fine old oak trees in resulting in some two-way roads in many communities. In many places the county engineer has left the old road on one side of row of magnificent oak trees and made a new road on the other side rather than take out the trees to widen the roadbed. QUEEN MARIE GIVES INTERVIEW TO THE PRESS (liv Associated Press) BELGRADE, Jan. 27—Queen Marie of Jugoslavia, a Rumanian by birth and a Serbian by marriage, who is ae- ! companying King Alexander on his tour through southern Serbia, has aroused a warm controversy between Bulgaria and Serbia ethnologists by the costume she has been wearing on her travels. She appeared at Skopie in a local j costume of bright colors on a white ! woolen background. When the. eth nologists in Sofia heard of this, they made the charge that she was wear ing a Bulgarian costume in order to appeal to the sentiments of a Bulgar ian population. The Belgrade eth nologists retorted spiritedly that the Queen was wearing a Serbian costume. So much local interest was manifest ed that finally the question was re ferred to the Queen herself.
