Smith sailed for Wash ington aboard the S. S. Alaska Satur day night, where he is journeying to ; submit his annual report of operations of the railroad, and present his re quests for appropriations for the fiscal year 1926-27. Mr. Smith’s complete financial report was published in Fri day’s Gateway. Encouragement of industries, such as mining, agriculture and woodwork ing, epotomizes Mr. Smith’s announc jed plans for next and future years. ;This w’ork will be furthered by the ! agency of a commercial representa tive armed with data calculated to im : press the investor abroad with oppor | tunities in this portion of Alaska. In | furtherance of encouraging woodwork ing manufacturings, Mr. Smith stated | that he had given demonstrations in The Alaska Railroad shops which show that salmon cases may be manu factured economically in Alaska along with the production of other lumber such as birch and cottonwood. With respect to agriculture, a small canning plant was introduced by the railroad j to prove that Alaskan vegetables! could be thus conserved at a profit and thus keep large sums of money at home. No change in policy from that of paring down operating expenses was announced, but it is understood that the railroad management is preparing j to enlarge the activities of the indus trial department as indicated, to the fullest extent permissible under funds j for that purpose.
