BANQUET ROOM and PRIVATE BOXES Seward Grill £ E E E MORE ON PEPS (Continued from Page One) “I hate the thought of leaving and having to sacrifice my business,” Mr. Phelps stated last night, “but illness in my immediate family in San Francisco is so vital that word has been sent to me that I must come. It is the only thing in the world which really could have made me take this step, selling my business—and I have done well—and departing from my many friends. If I ever return to Seward again, which is doubtful, it: will be only for a visit, for the family affairs in the States will keep me fully occupied. It is my intention to re main here about a month more, tho it is urgent that I leave sooner, but so many matters are yet to be attended to I doubt if it can be accomplished within that period. I put off selling the place as long as possible, but it had to come about.” For 14 years Mr. Phelps followed the mining game ,as he says ‘‘search ing for a gold mine.” He finally quit in disgust, after spending those years prospecting all over the Prince Wil liam country, Hope, Sunrise, the Val dez district ,and other places. Being in Valdez at the time the rumor ar rived that a railroad was going to be constructed out of Seward, he and a number of others, including T. W. Hawkins, and also Mrs. Schallerer, came over. That was in 1903, and ever since they, three of the original 17 pioneers, have been residents of the city. To hear Mr. Phelps recall those earlier days is another story in it self—a story which kindles the blood and strikes a flint to the strain of adventure in all. Of the busy con struction days and thousands of peo ple mingling in the activity; of the growth of Seward since the first cab jin was built, and of the many diffi culties experienced by the city in forging its way to its present status. Then there was that period when in quest for gold, when harrowing es capes from death on land and sea, particularly the time when for almost 50 hours he and his partner fought out a tempest in the sound in an open small skiff. Mr. Phelps will take memories down to California with him and if he can be persuaded to retell just a few of them a great similarity may be noted in pioneering days in the Territory and of that great Southern State. PRIVATE BOOTHS DANCE ROOM LOOKING AHEAD Alaskan progress of the past forecasts the future greatness of the Northland, and justifies all Alaskans in holding to their firm faith in the Territory’s possibilities and worth. By aiming high and working together—actively and steadily—those having to do with Al askan progress can accomplish much. “Looking Ahead” to still great er things, and planning and working accordingly, is the one way that a high purpose can be realized. The Alaska Railroad—a pioneer system—is gradually and pain stakingly striding towards a great goal—the greater development of Alaska; and that the future is bright and promising is attested by the steady and consistent upward trend of past and present activi ties. The Alaska Railroad is “Looking Ahead.” # DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR The Alaska Railroad (McKinley Park Route) Anchorage Alaska BJ NEW MODEL NO. 32 ATWATEF #j KENT SEVEN-TUBE RADIO RE J CEIVING SET $145, WITHOU1 Builders’ Supplies | BATTERIES Capt. 0.
