NEW BRUNSWICK RANCHES CON STRUCTED TO PREVENT ES CAPE OF CAPTIVES FREDERICTON, New Brunswick, Feb. 26. (/P)—Since muskrat has -be come the fashion for winter coats and wraps, the demand for muskrat skins is steadily increasing and to meet this demand muskrat ranches are being established in New Bruns wick. Several muskrat farms are now being successfully operated, but the undertaking is a hazardous one and to secure the farm so that the ani mals cannot escape requires much ingenuity. In order to properly secure musk rats in captivity, a pond of sufficient size must be secured and enclosed j in such a manner as to prevent the escape of the animals confined there in, and the pond must be of such a nature that it wrill not freeze solid during the winter season. Arrange- ■ ments for proper feeding must be i provided. At one farm, considerable progress i had been made in breeding muskrats j and initial results in litters of young j had been most satisfactory, when the j spring freshet flooded the pond and j resulted in the escape of nearly all • the muskrat in the inclosure. I In spite of the difficulties, presist- - ent efforts show that muskrat farms 1 can be op'erated -successfully and profitably, and there is an opportun ity for carrying on such an industry on a large scale because the musk-1 rat skin is not only used for natural I muskrat coats, but when plucked and ' dyed is sold for “Hudson Seal,” one 1 of the most fashionable furs on the market.
