ENTERTAINING RIG ITNDER the “Spice of life” column in the July 9 issue of ^The Literary Digest is found this item from the Fair banks daily: Entertaining Rig—In Los Angeles Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson bought a Franklin victrola which they drove to Seattle and then shipped to Fair banks—Fairbanks (Alaska) paper. Alaskan papers are no different from others, they all make mistakes- Just as long as they create a little laugh ter, all well and good. It was just about a year and a half ago when The Gateway got into the same column. May be, sometime, we will have a joke column and when we do we promise to have not only the Digest in it but the New York Times. QUEER FAMILY MUDDLE 4 CASE is reported which presents a n unusual problem ** of relationship among the members of a certain Cali fornia family. The man in the case has found a solution of the problem by giving himself up for bigamy. Then years ago he married a supposed widow, a Mrs. Stapleton, who had a 16-year-old daughter. Hearing later that his wife had a living husband in Texas, he left her and married the daughter, who has since borne him three children. Recently he learned that Stapleton had really died be fore the widow’s remarriage, consequently he finds him self with two wives on his hands, one of whom is his moth in-law and the other his step-daughter, while his three children are the grandchildren of his first wife* A rather awkward situation for all concerned, we should say. An Alabama lady wrote to the sheriff telling where 50 gallons of moonshine mash might be found. A sort of a mash note. High heels don’t make highbrows. “Home, James!” will soon be superseded by “Paris, Charles!” N . With Ford’s announcement of a new model car one is - reminded that America has never had a great epic poem, | We suggest “The Passing of the Flivver.” LEGAL NOTICE IN THE UNITED STATES LAND OFFICE AT ANCHORAGE, ALAS KA. Geo. A. Parks said. “It has been frequently stated in announcements from the Interior De partment and its representatives, Governor Parks pointed out, Secretary Work is working out a program to have all possible work performed for Alaska by departmental bureaus done in the Territory. This was made feas ible by the act passed by Congress last February authorizing the Depart ments of Interior, Agriculture and Commerce to appoint commissioners for Alaska to directly represent their' respective bureaus in the Territory. “The Governor has been designated to represent the Interior Department, Dennis Winn, the Department of Com- i merce and C. Senor Gallardo has given orders to lis staff that hereafter use of the word ‘manana” will be forbidden in all Jealings connected with the Ministry, and must be substituted by the word ‘hoy,” meaning today. The minister points out that fre juent employment of the word “ma lana” in Latin American countries !ed to ridicule in the United States and England, where it is taken as a symbol of Latin American indolence.
