Sirs GERMAN PLANES
NEED BETTER ENGINES
BERLIN, July 29. (/P)—Air-plane
engines constitute the chief problem
confronting German Aerial naviga
tion today, in the opinion of Dr. Wal
ther Huth, president of the German
Airvehiele Manufacturers’ Associa
tion. German engines, he stated at
the- annual -meeting of the associa
tion, are not big enough for trans
Atlantic flying. While airplane and
airship construction is on a -high le
vel in all other respects, he observed,
the question of more effective en
gines must be given special attention.
Dr. Huth agrees with Clarence D.
Chamberlin, who emphasized that
trans-oceanic flights are simply a
question of “bigger and better en
gines.”
Director Otto J. Merkel of the Luf
thansa, another speaker at the ann
ual meeting, agreed with Dr. Huth
as far as motors are concerned, but
insisted that numerous instruments
for night and fog flights -must be
added to the equipment of air pilots
before flying will be perfectly safe.
