Davis Nome Operator Learns ; Value Of Good Roads For Practical Use i -■— * Mr. Schcaffer spent some years ; : completing a trip with a satisfact ory cleanup says the Nome Nugget I Mr.Scheafer had quite an experi ence crossing the Lagoon at Safety. When he arrived at the lagoon on his way to Nome there was no ferryman, so after waiting a while and undoubtedly using the neces sary expressions, he constructed a raft out of driftwood, poled his way across, annexed the scow and re turned and took his car across and held to Nome with his golden car go. Mr. Scheafer spent soome years in Dawson and later came to Nome and then went outside and settled down for good (?) but did not i figure on the unknown quantity— the lure of the Nrth, and he is again with us. He thinks highly of the Casadepaga and knows there is good dredging ground there for ! years to come, and with the de | creasing cost of transportation due to the improved roads he believes that more dredges will be in opera tion in the near future. He throws bouquets at the work done by the Alaska Road Commis sion and supports it by figures, viz: I | He has sixty-five tons of freight to . ! haul, nore now is the hauling. This ^ at the regular rate of $60.00 a ton j would amount to $3,900.00, but j owing to the improved condition of j the road he is having it hauled by j his own truck at a miximum cost f of $15.00 per ton—a saving of $2,925.
