This announcement was made today by local Red Cross Chanter officials who say that during the next 12 months the organization will inten sify its First Aid and Life Saving campaign to reduce the useless waste of life by accidents both on land and in the water. With accidental deaths in the United States averaging nearly 90, 000 a year and still mounting an nually, officials are mustering their jforces for a concerted drive. Not j'ess than 80 percent of these deaths lean be prevented, they say, by j spreading knowledge of first aid and life saving. A severed artery, it is pointed out, will quickly bleed a person to death; but the applica tion' of a simple tourniquet will save him. Likewise, a person may stay unconscious in the water for a considerable time, and while appar ently drowned he may be revived :by the prone pressure method of re jsuscitation. These two instances are said to be typical of dozens of ways for saving lives in emerrv'mcies bv ap plying the knowledge of first aid and life saving. | Through its 3.50C chapters, one of which is located in practicahy every county, the Red Cross will of fer thru the year instruction in first aid and will train swimmers in methods for recovering drownizg persons from the water and reviv ing them. For the last 12 months the organ jization has made special efforts *o reach as many persons as possib e and in that period more than 150. 000 in the LTnited States received first aid training, while nearly 174, 000 persons are enrolled in its life saving corps In this time the or ganization also gave more than 4,000 lectures and demonstrations for the furtherance of its campaign. Seward Gateway Editor; To settle an argument, who intro duced the bill at the last Legisla ture raising the workman’s com pensation ? Reader Kennecott, Alaska The bill in question was introduc duced by Joseph H. Murray. In re ply to a query as to the history of the bill Mr. Murray said: “The bill is House Bill No 67, in troduced April 18. 1927, by myself. The bill amended the Act of 1923, which Act was drawn by Senator Dimond and introduced in the Sen ate by Senator Ayer. This Act of 1923 increased the schedule of com pensation in injured workmen by 30 percent. “The increased cost of things naturally lowered the purchasing power of the dollar; so in 1927 it seemed that the compensation to injured workmen was still too low. I took up the subject with Tony Dimond. with whom I had often discussed workmen’s compensation, and who was then in Juneali, and he drew for me the Act of 1921, about which inquiry is made. I General Tailoring and Hats Blocked for Ladies and Gentlemen. Phone Adams 91. Peyser’s Tailor Shop. therefore introduced the bill and in due time it passed. | “During all the time of drawing j the Act of 1925, and the working out of the compensation schedules, | it was our desire and intention to j provide for a uniform increase of 50 percent increase for the sake of safety The increase provided for in 1927 completes what Foster, Price, Staser. Dimond, Chamberlin and myself tried to do in 1923.” Have your films develop ed and printed at Sylvia’s.
