FORTUNES FROM MINES The Cande de Valenciana who discovered one of the richest mines in Guanajuato, Mexico, derived so much wealth from it that he is said to have got rid of $100,000,000 in a few years. Another Guanajuato silver king sent the King of Spain $2,000,000 for a Christmas present. T. R. McEwen, superintendent of the Seward schools for the past two years, is now in Seattle where he plans to enter business. Mrs. Lulu Manthey departs for Latouche tomorrow night on the S. S. Northwestern where she will remain for an indefinite period. LmurioMs Scenic Ro<t<c Per Capita Expense Of Current Expensesj Of Alaska Schools The following table, compiled by the Alaska School Bulletin, sets forth information relative to the per capita current expenses of schools in the incorporated cities and school districts for the school jvear 1927-28. Per capita current expenses include all cost with the exception of expenditures for capi tal outlay, such as new, buildings and grounds, new equipment—not replacements—etc., and other pay iments such as interest on bonds, and the like. It will be noted that there is in general a direct relation ship between the size of a school and its cost. The most noteworthy exception is Charcoal Point. The low cost of this school may be ex plained from the fact that no high school work is offered. Eagle is , the only other school in which ele mentary school work only is pre sented. She l wears brown khaki overalls a badly I torn black coat, a man’s heavy rub ber boot strapped on one foot and a galosh on the other, the whole outfit topped off with a faded brown hat. And yet there isn’t a sourdough in all the Yukon Territory or Alaska who won’t take off his hat to her, for she only recently completed a hike from Hazelton, B C., to Daw son: the gold citv of the Yukon Territory. Little is known of Lillian Ailing in the country to which she came. And true to the spirit of the sour dough, no questions are asked. For Lillian Ailing has proved herself. BERGER DUE NOV. 15. Captain H. Berger, of the M. S. Discoverer, in a telephone mes sage from Anchorage last evening, said he was leaving last night for ' down the Inlet and would arrive in Seward either on the 15 or 16tli of this month. He will leave soon after for Iliamna and way ports then back to the Port of Seward. The present Cook Inlet trip is thot to be the last of the season. MRS. BRUNDAGE DEAD An illness of two years terminat ed fatally for Mrs.Juanita Brund iage when she passed away last week in Fairbanks. She had been confined to the hospital for a month. Death was caused by can cer of the stomach. Mrs. Brundage had made her home in the North for 30 years, coming to Dawson in 1898. James McConnell, nite watch man on the Seward dock, is one , of the few local residents who have been summoned for jury duty at the Valdez session; he de parts tomorrow. James S. Bogart, deputy U.
