Plague Kills Herds
Russian Reindeer
—
UREK, Siberia, Dec., 10, (A1)-Santa
may have difficulty finding enough
reindeer for his sleigh next Christ
mas unless a mysterious plague that
has broken out among the animals
on the frozen Siberia tundras can
be mastered.
Half of the herds in the Tazovsk
region are said to have perished,
and veterinarians sent to the area
returned unable to ascertain eithei
the cause or the cure of the plague.

Japanese Soldiers
Get $3 Every Month.
TOKYO, Dec., 10, (/P)—The army
and navy have drawn up new paj
scales which, if approved by the j
diet in this winter’s session, will in
crease the monthly wage of private
soldiers and seamen by 75 cents.
This is a boost of 33 percent over
the present wage and will give Ja^ •
ares:- soldiers and sailors the equiv
olent of $3 for tobacco and bee:
each month.
The new scale provides similar
increase for non-commissioned of-I
ficers the highest of whom receive
about double a private’s pay.
Gene Norton, an oldtimer of the
Interior country, now a resident
of Homer, arrived Saturday from
Valdez and will await here the de
parture of the Steamer Starr for
the Westward country.
W. P. Fuller, well known Lake Ke
nai resident, was a week-end bus
iness visitor in Seward.
A. F. Davis, local business man,
departed for Seattle on the Stea
mer Victoria. Mr. Davis will join
his family in California where
they will remain over the winter.
A GOOD TIME BY ALL
Again the B. P. R. yell crew was
on the job at Saturday evening’s
basketball game to supply the
fans with something new in the
way of pep and noise. Led by a
happy Major Domo, dexteriously
twirling a broom baton, the boys
paraded about the gym and at
the conclusion sounded taps while
members stood with arched backs
and down-cast eyes. Harris, as
usual, was there with a big bass
drum.
