It was reported, but later denied, that Clarence Mackay, pres ident of the Postal Telegraph Co., had become reconciled with his daughter because of the child’s death. The rapid spread of the blaze made the work of the fire fighters difficult and water shortage also hampered their movements. The fire was finally under control af ter three-quarters of the plant was destroyed.
