SOME MORE BUREAUCRATIC LITANY
For verily we say unto you; Hark ye that thou
obeyest our mandate. Get ye not forth into the wilder
ness with thine axe and gun and there chcppeth one of our
trees that thou shalt build unto thyself a house, and
dwell therein; nor shalt thou build any fire to warm
thou digets, broil thy bacon and stew thou beans for the
morrow, lest thou burnetii up our game preserves and
mosquitos. Neither shalt thou cut cordwood for thine
neighbor unless thou hast first secured a dispensation
and posteth a bond in lawful money of the realm. For, lo!
there will come a time, sayeth the prophets, when the
anoited of the land shall desire our forests to tie up in
bow knots to prevent competition against the paper
trusts, and to manufacture paper on which shalt be
planted other and further restrictions good for the sal
vation of thy soul and guiding you in the straight and
narrow painway, lest thy stumble into the hands of the
wardens and land in the whoosgough; for verily it is
written that to him that hath, it shall be given, and to
he that hath not is shall be taken away.
For we are the power, and the agents of bureau
cracy, the heir-apparent of conservation.
Talking about the birds, the beasts and the flowers
of Alaska, such as was done recently at Portland by Sol
Silverman of Anchorage, instead of spreading Alaska’s
troubles to those outside who do not understand the sit
uation up here and care less, is the kind of publicity the
Territory needs, and it wouia be well for AlusKans when
they travel beyond the confines of our section of the
country, to remember the attention Mr. Silverman re
ceived. More power 10 the Ancnorage gent.
“Slim” Chance, convicted bigamist with seven wives
to his discredit, was offered probation but refused it. He
told the judge he would rather pound rocks than break
hearts.
