WESTWARD SCENICS
I
Ever since the scientists estimated that Mount
Katmai blew a cubic mile of volcanic dust into the
air in the great eruption of 1912 and that. enough
steam escapes to keep railroads and factories turn
ing there is not a man who breathes who would
not like to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.
This is one of the outstanding wonders o± the
world, a thing primeval, getting down to the very
genesis of the earth and explaining largely why all
Westward Alaska is even today a land of profound
changes wiith a coast line constantly altering and
islands rising up only to sink again.
Strange indeed it is, that the great natural pheno
menum has been passed up by tourist boomeis who
generally are willing to sell the paper off the wall if they
can get a crowd to come and see it. Steamship routes
have a great deal to do with it beyond that no one
has had the courage to provide the trails and hotel
accomodations that the modern tourist demands.
But the thing must inevitably come. Westward
Alaska has a beauty and lure all its own. The long
arm of the peninsula has the greatest collection of
active volcanoes on all the earth, according to the
very good word of Dr. Jaggers who has studied them
all/
This is another time when we wish the promoter
would enter the land. The proposition requires capi
tal and much publicity but its dollars to doughnuts
that proper financing and exploitaton of the scenic
wonders of Westward Alaska will bring ample re
turns. Steamship lines will perforce change their rout
ings or new lines will go into service and thousands
of globe trotters who claim that they have seen the
world will get a new thrill.
One consolation is that the uplifters will not enjoy
heaven very much with nobody to uplift.
ALL ARE WRITERS NOW
It is the simplest thing in the world to win fame as
a writer nowadays—provided you have won fame in
some other way first. The newspapers and magazines
bristle with articles by this or that celebrity, and it be
gins to look as though famous folks are going to monop
olize the printed page, to the exclusion of professional
writers.
But there’s a catch in it. In most cases the famous
folks do not write the articles. They merely give a reg
ular writer an outline of what they wish to say, and he
does the rest. Literary .efforts by proxy appear to be
quite renumerative, however, particularly if they run
to testimonials endorsing cigarettes as have been appear
ing recently in the Gateway, a fair sample of those be
ing published throughout the country.
Job had great patience, no doubt, but he was never
interested in seeing a Muscle Shoals bill passed.
Late reports say Mexico still has a living ex-presi
dent, but we don’t guarantee this news.
Lunatics publish a paper at; an asylum in Humber
stone, England. There may be others.
