The Territorial Board of Edu cation threw an awful jol- in to Seward, and probably many other Alaskan towns if the truth be known, when, during the re cent session of the Legislature, it failed to consider the financial standings of municipalities when, with one bold stroke of the pen, the committee crossed out the paragraph in the good book which had given back to munvipali ties 80 per cent of expenditures on text books and school room equipment. The only rebate now to Alaskan towns from the Ter ritory is from teachers. To the town of Seward it means a loss of approximately $2,000, ex plained President W. C. Erwin, of the Seward School Board, who was notified of the new ruling In the last mail from Juneau and who, in turn, imparted the sad news to the councilmen last night. Prom that point on all else was [forgotten; the council chamber became pregnant with ideas, | suggestions and solutions. The grand finale came with a rtsolu ton being passed under suspend ed rules in which the new ruling | was, perforce, accepted, but under protest. It is hoped a deficiency bill may be presented to the 1933 legislature and refund granted. The city will now ask the court for an order to sell certain lots acquired from last delinquent tax and assessment notice. Reports from the Seward Gen eral Hospital and Schjooi Boards were received, read, and ordered filed. The council voted the local Post of the American. Legion a vote of thanks for undertaking and carrying through to a suc cessful completion, improvements to the Seward General Hospital grounds. Councilman Manthey reported | on sidewalk work on Third ave nue. Councilman Cooper reported on work beng accomplished on the main thoroughfares, the same to continue indefinitely. Another spirited session got underway in discussing the pro- ; posed license on itinerary mer- ; chants or peddlers. The civic com mittee has the matter in hand. Collection of Federal mercan tile license tax is to be enforced up to the hilt and the assessment and tax committee was instructed to hit the ball 100 per cent. Rep. Cal M. Brosius was pre sent at the meeting and briefly explained certain actions of the recent legislature and also en lightened the councilmen as to LEGAL NOTICE IN THE DISTRICT COURT FOR THE TER RITORY OF ALASKA, THIRD DIVISION A.
