COL OHM PLEASED WITH REPORT OT THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Accompanied by H. E. Stevens, vice president of the Northern Pa cific railroad, General Manager O. F. Ohlson, of the Alaska Railroad, arrived in Seward last night on his private car, and will return to An chorage headquarters today. Mr. Stevens is returning from a big game hunt on Wood River, in the Valdez Creek district. Accom panying him on the trip were Col onel Ohlson, E. T. Foley, of the Foley Construction Co., New York, and Carl Swenson, also of New York. Mr. Stevens secured the lim it of big game, with the exception of caribou, in the first three days of hunting. The others secured some fine specimens, including sheeping killed by Colonel Ohlson. Completing the hunt on Wood river. j Messrs. Foley and Swenson jour- ! Goodyear All-Weather \ • at a NEW LOW PRICEl OGLE’S GARAGE neyed to Fairbanks, where they en gaged a limousine for a trip along the Richardson highway, where they planned to shoot caribou. They will continue on to Cordova to make connections with the SS Alaska, sailing at 11 o’clock this morning. : Confirmation of The Gateway’s story of yesterday with respect to reduction in rates on the Alaska Railroad was given by Colonel 'Ohlson last night, and the recom mendations for a reversion to the prevailing freight rates before the iHowell committee upped them, and a six-cent passenger rate will be among Colonel Ohlson’s recommen .dations when he journeys to Wash jington in December. Colonel Ohlson is well pleased with the report of the Geological Survey, both as regards precious metals and coal. The examination has revealed great possibilities for Anthracite Ridge and the deter mining of larger and better basal beds of bituminous coal in the Moose Creek section of the Mata nuska fields. In addition to the magnitude and quality of the basal beds as at present revealed, there is a large area in the Moose Creek field which theoretically contains beds that should be even greater in volume and quality. This will be deter mined next summer when drilling of Anthracite is completed and op erations transferred to the Moose Creek field. One of the beneficial effects of the recent Geological Survey ex aminations, says Colonel Ohlson, will be the valuable data available to the railroad in answering in quiries with respect to precious metal mining. In addition to the Survey’s work, an engineer will be ; assigned to the railroad to follow 1 up and assist prospectors and mine j owners in bringing their holdings to the attention of investing capital. Boats in port today included the SS Alaska, USS Discoverer, MS Westdahl, Marian, Roy, Joan, Ba varia. Flattery, Rolph I, T-3048, Helldiver and the Trio.
