! blow up the Tokyo branch of the
National City Bank of New York
was contained in a letter received
by C. F. Thomas, the manager. Na
tionalistic and patriotic elements
believed those behind the threat
charged the bank w'ith buying
American dollars and draining Ja
pan’s gold.

na Insurance Company, backed a
plan for the creating of a $2,000,
000,000 finance reconstruction cor
poration to aid railroads and busi
ness.
Setting up such a corporation
would free $1,250,000,000 t-o circu
lation, Mr. Traylor declared.

NEW YORK, Jan. 4. (JP)—Five of
the richest families in the United
States lost a hundred million dol
lars during 1931 because of the de
preciation of railroad securities, ac
cording to estimates of E. E. Laufer,
statistician for Louchein, Minton
& Company, brokers.
The families are the Vanderbilts,
Bakers, Harknesses, James and
Harrimans. The losses are compu
tated on the theory that holdings
are still as large as they were at
the beginning of the year.
PARIS, Jan., 4, (/P)—Threatened
with a bloody labor revolt due to
the grave unemployment situation
aggravated by the nationalist feel
ing against foreign occupation of
the Saar Valley, the League of Na
tions committee, which governs
that important mining and indus
trial territory, issued a drastic de
cree calculated to effect disarma
ment of the civilian group.
