THIS SPACE FIS SALE 1 F BEST IT 1 (By W.A.S.) Delegate Wickersham has been carefully studying the effect, if it could be accomplished, of extend ing the Federal Highway Act to Alaska. At present the Alaska Road Commission is expending $300,000 and the Forest Service nearly one million dollars yearly, in the Ter ritory. It is the opinion of some of the interested officials here that if the Highway Act were extended to Alaska, Congress would consider the needs of the Territory and the sum now being expended, and at tills time the sum appropriated might not exceed the amount now being received, while the Territory would be compelled to contribute as its share possibly from three to five thousand dollars yearly, as well as all costs of engineering ex penses and all maintenance of roads after they had been con structed through the joint efforts of the Federal government and the Territory. The Delegate has been advised not to open up the matter m the present Congress because of the general inclination to decrease ''ll appropriations. The amount agreed on by the Budget for the Alaska Road Commission for the ensuing year is $650,000 and it will require considerable effort to have the sum increased to the $800,000 that the Commission expects to get. * * * * l ( ( I i In his annual report submitted to the President by Secretary of the Interior Wilbur, he states that one of the great latent resources of Al aska is its forests. Thirteen per cent of the national forest area of the United States is in Alaska, most of it on the southern coast from Ketchikan to Cook Inlet. A billion board feet annually may be har- - vested each year. Ninety per cent of all production will be useable for paper. Hydroelectric power sites are abundant.
