PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE
WRITES ALASKAN RE IS
INTERESTED IN NORTH
While Alaska has its famous hot
springs which are soothing and
beneficial, considerable interest has
been manifest of late years re
1 garding the springs frequented by
| Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt, of New
! York, Democratic standard bearer
j for this fall’s presidential race.
! The following letter, addressed
i to E. McPhee, prominent Anchor -
! age business man and one of the
leading Democrats in the Terri
tory, will be of especial interest to
many in the North:
Mr. E. McPhee, Anchorage, Alas
ka. “My dear Mr. McPhee: “It was
good of you to write me of your per
sonal experience with Dr. Holder,
of Seattle. You may be sure that I
appreciated the spirit in which it
was written, and was glad to hear
that you had such personal benefit
from his treatments. I, myself, have
a daily massage treatment, and
find that this and regular swim
ming are doing a great deal for me.
Within a few weeks I expect to go
to Warm Springs, Georgia, for the
annual trip which is both a rest
and a physical stimulation. In this
connection, I am enclosing an ar
ticle which it may interest you to
read.
“I was also interested to know
that you are a Democrat of such
long and loyal party service. As j
vou know, Alaska was the first of j
the several conventions to give me |
their public approval and support
I have always been interested in
your country and its enormous pos
sibilities, and naturally this action
pleased me very deeply.
“I shall make it a point to read
up about the Alaska Railroad sit
uation which you mention.
“With hearty thanks for your let
ter and its friendly message,
Yours very sincerely,
Franklin D. Roosevelt.” j
Seattle reports that a portion of
the 1932 salmon pack which has

to make room for the larger ship

was reported at noon today to be
due from the south at 4 o'clock this
afternoon, and that the liner would

BETTER TIMES ARE COMING
Don’t be Discouraged!
Don’t lose the will to win .... don’t join the pessimists who
see naught but disaster ahead—
During a previous depression, the government had to is
sue paper “Clearing House Certificates” as a substitute for
money. Conditions were just as bad, only we have forgotten.
Prosperity has always followed bad times—this is one of the
laws of business cycles.
Now is the time to substitute the word “Reconstruction” for
“depression.”
Don’t be discouraged. Lend a hand to reestablish confidence.
America will see this through and emerge victorious.
Better times are coming!
