T. R. Fear, from, the office of the
Tacoma Collector of Internal Rev
enue, was an arrival in Seward on
Wenesday from the Interior where
he has been helping straighten
Alaskans on the complexities of
the newly enacted revenue law, as
well as to attend to details coming
under other tax laws. Mr. Fear is
a guest at the Van Gilder hotel.
GENERAL SAYS CHINA
IS VIRTUALLY ADRIFT
SHANGHAI, Aug. 17.—China is
a nation virtually adrift, Chiang
Kai Shek, former President, and
virtual commander in chief of the
army, declared. He says China
appears to be drifting towards the
rocks of financial disaster. While
foreign powers action with regard
to the Manchurian government is
at a standstill, the leaders are at
tempting to solve the crisis result
ing from the resignation of Wan
Ching Wei, president of the execu
tive Yuan.

HI OLYMPIC SHOWING
BERLIN Aug., 17., (/P)— The with
drawal of Germany’s offer to hold
the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin
was demanded by a section-of the
press, headed by the Dutch Zer
treng, disgusted with the perfor
mances of most of the German en
tries in the games at Los Angeles,
the newspapers urged that Ger
many henceforth refuse to par
ticipate.
The Deutche Zeitung has de
manded the resignation of the
officials who were alleged to have
been responsible for the poor show
ing of Geifnan athletes i n the
games.
One of these was Theodore Wm.,
Laward and another Carl Diem. The
newspapers claimed that the money
invested in training the team could
have been invested to greater ad
vantage in military training for
German youths.

RIO de JANEIRO, August 18 —
Lower taxation and consolidations
made by the government regard
ing telegraph service has shown
admirable results here with ad
ministrative departments of 19
national telegraph stations show
ing an increase of approximately
$137,000 only.
Ten others showed losses of $21,
000 in revenue, according to an of
ficial announcement.
