A fire which burned to the
ground a two-room cabin at an
early hour, came close to claiming
the life of the sole occupant, Pete
Smith, a t Fairbanks. Sleeping
soundly, he had no knowledge of
the blaze until the bed clothing
caught afire and then made his
way from the smoke-filled house
with difficulty.
With the 1932 placer mining sea
son approaching its close, it is
learned on good authority that the
total gold production of the Fourth
Division this year will be approxi
mately equla to 1931, when some
$3,000,000 was recovered.
There will soon be placed before
the board of directors of the Eva
Creek Mining Co., a plan for re
financing the company it was an
nounced by E. A. Austin, manager.

; Nearly all the company’s creditors
! have already studied the plan and
have given it their practically un
animous approval. Refinancing is
made necessary by inability to
meet claims contracted in the past.
New capital would be used to in
crease mill capacity by 50 percent
and to make other changes so as to
reduce operating costs. In Mr.
Austin’s opinion these changes
would result in putting the mine
on a paying basis.
Preparations are being made by
Pacific Alaska Airways for inaugu
ration of service under winter air
mail contracts. That company has I
all the contracts previously held
by Alaskan Airways and Pacific
International Airways. In the In
terior the routes lead from Nenana
down the Yukon, from Nenana to
the Kuskokwim and Iditarod and
from Fairbanks to the Yukon.
There are also three routes out of
Anchorage. All star route contracts
in Alaska in which airplanes are
used are held by Pacific Alaska
Airways.
