Speaking of the Firemen’s Hard
Time Ball New Year’s Eve, one of
members of the organization said
“just come in your regular cloth
ing.” Since then much conjecture
has been made as to just what he
meant!
In any case, the oldest rags one
possesses will be in order; for the
first time in years, many will un
doubtedly be at ease, preferring
rags to riches and ‘soup and fish.’
All decorations in Dreamland—
silly name, whut?—will be in har
mony writh the attendance, trim
mings plucked from yon hill and
dale being the motif.
It is also reported that very
near beer will be served at the
Punch Bowl. During intermissions,
the Firemen’s quart-et, composed
' of whiskey tenors, beer-tones and
j alcos, will render that plaintive
melody “Out Where the Wets Be
j gin.’ Another rendition may be
i “Alaska, the Fusel Oil Frontier.”

Attorney L. V. Ray returned to
his local offices today from Val
dez where legal matters before
the district term of court have en
gaged his attention for a month.
OH) AGENTS PICKED
ON SICK MEN FRIDAY
Sixty days and $250 fine was
the Christmas package handed to
George Mavris, long-time and res
pected citizen of Seward, when
dry agents entered his home yes
terday afternoon, armed with a
John Doe warrant, and found one
pint of beer and five gallons of
home-made wine.
It is reported that Mr. Mavris,
who has been ill for more than a
year, was on his 19th day of a 20
I day diet and was literally yanked
I from his sick bed to a prison cot.
I The beer and wine, as well as or
| ange juice, has been used for
: medicinal purposes continually, it
was also said, and that he is so
weak he can hardly care for him
self.
Upon investigation of the facts,
The gateway was informed at noon
| today that a physician had at
tended Mr. Mavris in jail and
pronounced him as not being sick.
