Wedell, of Patterson, La., won the speed clas sic of the All-American Air races, the 15 mile free-for-all for ships of any displacement, at an aver age speed of 205.295 miles an hour. ‘BEAST GUEST TAKES LEAD IN SECOND BOUND LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9, —Charley “Beau” Guest took the leadership in the 8th annual Los Angeles open championship Sunday at the Wil shire Country Club during the sec ond round of play. Guest represents a country club in Deal, N. J., and had a 69 which, with his previous 70, gave him a 139 total. In second place came Craig Wood , another Deal profes sional, who turned in a par round of 71. SETS RADIO STATION Private interests have estab lished a radio telephone station at Poorman. Alaska, about 30 miles from the Ruby radio station of the U. S. Signal Corps, it was announced. To afford communication to Poorman for all other telegraph points in Alaska and the United States, suitable radio telephone equipment has been installed by the Signal Corps at its Ruby office, where all traffic for Poorman will be relayed. Widespread reports say that Miss Frances Perkins, industrial com missioner of New York state, may be chosen Secretary of Labor by President-elect Roosevelt although no announcements have been made. Miss Perkins, known to all who j deal with labor statistics as spon j sor of New York state’s elaborate figures on unemployment and oth- j i er important labor matters, is gen- j ! erally identified as a liberal. I She has worked diligently for, j social welfare projects, notably of j i late in encouraging responses to | nation-wdde pleas for unemploy- > : ment relief. She has been insist ent in her demands in New York ; j state for adequate care of the j workers and has cited her statis- i tics frequently in proof of the j need. Investigation of the New York State Factory commission, which J j enabled much legislation of social | i character, was directed by her. A graduate of Mount Holyoke college in 1902, Miss Perkins also studied at the University of Penn sylvania and obtained a master of arts degree at Columbia Universi ty. She was executive secretary of the Consumers’ league in New York from 1910 to 1912 and lec tured in sociology during that pe riod. Recently Miss Perkins was nam ed by a group of Massachusetts progressives under leadership of | Professor Felix Frankfurter of | Harvard as the type which the i group w'ould like to see chosen for i the Roosevelt cabinet, j Miss Perkins, 50, is the wife of ' Paul C. Wilson, but she has used f her maiden name in her profes | sional career. They have one j daughter.
