' The domestic travel story prize winner for 1932 was Miss Ruth Se-! cor. Her story covered the trip she made from Franklin, Alaska, to New York City. She “mushed” overland to Eagle on the Yukon river, used the White Pass Yu- ; kon Route river steamer to Wrhite-, horse and rail to Skagway, steam- i er to Seattle, coastwise steamer to-! San Francisco and intercoastai steamer to New York. Miss Secor taught school at Franklin during, the winter of 1931-32. The 1931 domestic travel story contest was won by a California teacher who made a trip to Alaska I on one of the Alaska Steamship Company steamers during that year. J. “Jack” Lincke is in receipt of news announcing the marriage in Seattle of his son Ensign Jack Reins Lincke, U. S. N. Air Divi sion and Miss Betty Brandt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brandt. The young couple will be at home at 904 Bellevue Place, Se attle. Ensign Lincke was honor grad uate at Kemper (Mo.) Military Academy and medal man in a class of 85, took a course in agriculture at Bozeman, Mont., Agricultural College, and is a graduate of the University of Montana, where he majored in Journalism. While at Montana University he was in command of the cadet corps and was commissioned Sec ond lieutenant under recommenda tion of Brigadier General Morton, commander of the Ninth Army Corps, San Francisco, and Briga dier General James Gordon Steese, former president of the Alaska Road Commission. At Kemper Lieu tenant Lincke was under instruc tion of Lieutenant Pence., who was in command of the U. S. Troops at Anchorage the last year of their :enure at Anchorage. Following his commission to the J. S. Army Lieutenant Lincke was nstruction officer of cadets at Montana, after which he secured . transfer to the U. S. Navy, where ;e underwent training for the Air ;orps. While a student at Pen acola, Fla., he cracked up and was ncapacitated for six months. During the interim of recovery ie joined the staff of the Tacoma ,edger and became successively fate and assistant city editor of hat newspaper. During the naval war maneuvers ie covered the news for the North tmerican Newspaper Alliance as pecial observer aboard the U. S. S. Vest Virginia. Recovering his physical powers ie resumed his work at Pensacola, ffiere he spent a year and secured iis navy wings and received the ommission of ensign, later being tationed at Sand Point, Wash., dr Base and later-transferred to Ian Diego where he served aboard he airplane carrier Saratoga with i combat squadron and later on he Colorado with an observation eaplane unit- From there he was letailed to Honolulu to a ua.trol >lane squadron, where he remained intil last July. Reverting to the reserve officers’ :orps, he joined the Boeing Air jlane company service at Seattle, where he is now stationed. Ensign Lincke’s record in the 'Javal Air Service includes 1500 lours in the air on 50 types of nilitary and commercial craft, in :luding sea, land and amphibian nachines, with a considerable of he total on twin and tri-motored >lanes on sea and land. Writing to his father, Ensign jincke stated that he might ac cept an offer from a Seattle firm, J owning several amphibians and ■ flying boats, to fly one to Seward ■ this spring and engage in commer- ( cial flying somewhere in Alaska. « In this event he will bring his \ bride with him. J Thus two fathers—Ross Heckey ■ and C. J. Lincke—residents of the ■ Rail Belt, have sons who have J made good in the U. S. Navy, Al- ■ fred Heckey being a graduate of ■ Annapolis and a commissioned ( officer active in the service of the . Pacific fleet. - Alfred received instruction as a linotype operator and reporter un der C. J. Lincke while the latter was editor of the Anchorage Times.
