BUTS VESSEL FOB ALASKA JFISH TRADE Negotiations for the purchase of the South American freighter Nosa Duke by the Northland Transpor tation Company for service in the Seattle-Southeastern Alaska trade are expected to be closed in New Orleans, according to William Se mar. vice-president and manager of the Northland Transportation Company. The Nosa Duke will be used pri marily as a cannery vessel during the summer months, a service be-j ing performed this year by the chartered freighter Perry L. Smi thers. The deal for the ship is sub ject to dry dock inspection in New Orleans. The Girdwood Shipping Com pany of Seattle is handling the ne gotiations for the Nosa Duke which takes her name from the first let ters of New Orleans and South America. She is owned by the Nosa Line, a subsidiary of W. R. Grace & Co., and has been operating from Gulf ports to South America. The vessel is of 1.456 net tons reg ister. 298 feet long and 40 feet beam. She has four holds. i The Nosa Duke is expected to sail from Seattle about July 1. The Northland Transportation Compa ny operates the motorships North- | land and Norco and the chartered | freighter Perry L. Smithers in the Seattle-Southeastern trade. American rainbow trout are being propagated successfully in Peru from eggs shipped from the United States in 1928 $500,000 FLOOD DAMAGE SPOKANE, June 19.—Flood dam age in the Kootenai Valley and in Northern Idaho neared $500,000. The Columbia is still on a rampage with the water remaining about the same at Kelso. Other points of the river have risen and great damage has been done to farms and homes. Capt. John A. Tollbom, former first-officer on the SS. Starr, was scheduled to leave Seattle this week en route to Alaska, accord ing to arrivals from that city. It was also stated that Capt. Toll bom is bringing his two sons, Arne and Bjarne, North with him. -1 INITIAL APPEARANCE CHICAGO, June 19. —Ruth Page, prominent American dancer, made her initial appearance in a new ballet, “La Guiblessee” at the aud itorium Theater here. Frederick Stock of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted. BEST INVENTION DENVER, Colo. June 19. — A col lapsible berry box, which won’t col lapse when it isn’t supposed to, was adjudged the best invention on display at the exhibition of the National Inventors Congress here. Jessen, accompanied by daughter Lois, left Seward in Pilot Art Woodley’s plane Sunday afternoon for Moose Pass to join Mrs. Jessen and Ernestine Jessen, who are enjoying an outing in that garden spot. Edwin Sandbeck ac companied the party. Pilot Wood ley was to land his plane on Crater lake. They were to have returned early this morning but word from them today said that they had de cided to make a visit to Hope while they were in that region. They are to return this evening. A local report states that the big navy transport Argonne, now in Wesward waters, will come to Seward for the Fourth of July.
