(By Bert W. Harris—Sourdough) I sing of the brave and the strong tonight, To Musher and sourdough; In fancy again old times recall This song of the long ago A song of the long ago I’ll write to-night, To those who travelled afar; To the musher and sourdough who smiled, And panned where life’s trea sures are. This ditty to those who blazed new ' trails— Made marks thru pathless wilds To musher and sourdough this song, To those who tried and smiled. To those who failed and smiled I sing, Who faced the storms and the snow; Who prodded the huskies along the trails Where frozen tundras blow. So go with me in the mystic train, In fancy old times begile As we sing of musher and sour-1 dough— To those who could mush and smile. To those of the pack, and pick, and pan l Who faced the blinding snow, j I sing to the boys who had the guts, To harness their dogs and go. To the boys with the courage I sing to-night Who at Nome in the frozen sand, Had the courage to claim life’s richest prize, With a maul, and a pick, and a pan Of golden days I sing my lads, Of the “Land just over the hill”; Where the tenderfoot never dared to go All hail to the men with a will! To Dawson, Klondike, Iditarod. Wends this mystic vanguard train; Now south, now north, now east, now west, j They followed their dogs for gain. Of better days I sing my friends,! When men were men, and strong; When the Golden Rule was the only law, And justice balanced the wrong. When dust was coin and prosperity Beckoned on every hand; I sing of the days that lie in the past, j When men sought the placer to pan When pay was gold and dirt was pay, I fancy that none can revile, Those wonderful, better days of gold When men could mush, and smile. This dream of musher and sour dough, In fend recollection’s flight, Of men who toiled in the golden sands, My thoughts return to-night. So I’ll close this rhyme of the mys tic train, —Old memories languish so, All hail, you mutts, to the courage and guts Of the musher and sourdough!
