This herd of yaks w a s started up in Alaska and a _ot of hooey published in pa pers and Government pam phlets about what an econo mic asset they were going to be. All they amounted to was a swell future behind them. The yaks first lived up by the Alaska College, but having a roving disposition, j confinement did not agree with them and they wander ed off down the Alaska Rail road where they vexed the Railroad men by trampling down all the gravel at the fills, leaving the ties bare, and sleeping in the tunnels j and wouldn’t get out to let| the “Cannon Ball” go thru.! So the Railroad stepped on; the gas and “Siwashed” ‘em. I Then the Government spent; several more thousands of j dollars to build a corral. But i the yaks wouldn’t stay put,' so the experiment is classed! as one of the Government’s! experiments that failed as something that might have been, but isn’t, never will be, and why bother? So they were escorted past the elevator to the nearest stairway, and several barrels of their hides were sent to Seattle but no market has been found for them, and no NOTICE Hi. S. Patty, head of the mines school of the Alaska College, are visitors in Seward today with Col. Otto F. Ohlson, general manager of the i Alaska Railroad. They arrived here last evening on Col. Ohlson’s speed car. They visited Moose Pass yes terday. Previous to inspecting the mines of this area they visited the Willow Creek area. The British flier is on his way back to London to rush work on a new plane in which he and his wife, the former Amy Johnson, are expected to seek a long distance re cord. The plane will be a duplicate of the one in which the Mollisons flew the Atlantic only to crash at the airport at Bridgeport, Conn. Mrs. Mollison will remain in the United States a while inspecting American developments in this country. GOING TO ANTARCTIC NEW YORK, Aug. 25. —Rear Ad miral Richard E. Byrd dispatched his new flagship, “Pacific Fir,” to be equipped for her departure on a South Polar expedition. GAMING MAY BE PERMITTED PARIS, Aug. 25.—The long stand ing taboo in France upon roulette and Trente et Quarante may be lifted at last by the French Gov ernment because the country is losing so much of its “Casino trade” to foreign resorts.
