The Marine Corps has designated the Week of December 7-13, 1947, as Marine hymn centennial week, United States Marines have sung this hymn for 100 years, ever since an unknown Marine put the words to the music of an old Spanish folk tune In 1847. That was just after the "Halls of Montezuma" won their place in the American History when, during the Mexican, War, U. S. Marines stormed the historic castle of Chapultepec in Mexico City. The unknown Marine poet copied the first lines of the hymn from the -hand-painted Ma rine Corps battle flag which since 1S04 had borne the words "to the shores of Tripoli." That phrase was in tribute to the deeds of the Marines in the war with the Tripoli pirates. In one engagement eight Marines commanded by First Lieu tenant Presley N. The famous Lucin cut 0{t - carrying the tracks of the South ern Pacific railroad across Great 1 Salt Lake in Utah, is the longest j railroad bridge structure in the United States. It is of pile-trestle construction, 12 miles in length, and was completed in 1903, The Huey Long bridge. 4,4 miles in length, across the Mississippi river above Mew Orleans, Is the longest railway highway bridge of steel and con crele construction in the nation. It was opened fn December, 1935. j __ j ert. With a boldness that has sel dom been equaled in history, they assaulted the town and O'Bannon and his Marines seized the harbor fort and raised the Stars and Stripes for the first time in that j part of the. world. The Marines then turned the guns of the fort on | the governor's castle.
