NAVY TO OPERATE TRADING COMPANY FOR ISLANDS IN TRFST TERRITORY j the Island Trading Company of Jtl-j cronesia on January X, 1948, to provide needed goods and economic opportunities for natives of the Gar- j oline, Mashall and Marianas island groups. The new company takes the place of the United States Commercial Company, a subsidiary of the Re construction Finance Corporation, which previously provided com mercial trade Cor the islands held under United States trusteeship since the war. To carry out its function of pro viding goods for the natives at a reasonable cost, the Island Trading Cdhipany, which has. been assigned nine officers of the Supply Corps, . will take over from the United I States Commercial Company fifcili ties serving 114 retail stores, which are largely native owned and oper a t ed. The Navy will begin operating i addition. wholesale) branches will be located at Koror, Yap, Truk, Ponape, Kwajaleln and Majuro. In line withe Ihe general economic policy, management of | the retail stores is being turned i over to the natives as rapidly IkMstbfa,, The islands of the Trust Terri- j tory were held by the Japanese j from the end of World War I. * The end of World War II found them drained of a large part of material assets, including tools, fishing tackle and clothing, and with their productive capacities down to a minimum. To heln the natives, the Navy Military Government first gave out necessities. Later, the need, of commercial trade as a start toward self-support was seen, and Jhe United States Commercial Company took over the job. This year, under terms of the United Nations-an proved Trusteeship Agreement, the Navy was given responsibility for the Trust Territory.
