HIGHLIGHTS on SPORTS By "Hardy" Humes Lightning in Harness It was in August 1935 that Greyhound, greatest of the na tion's three-year-old trotters won the $33,000 j "Hambclto r nlan" eepted classic of harness horse racing In Amer • lea. The race was run on tli^ I/, famous Good ' Time mile track nt Goshen, N. before a huge crowd of 40,000 enthusiastic "harness" fans. Greyhound, a 1 to 2 favorite, swept through the event in two straight heats. Driven by Sep Palin of Indianapolis, Greyhound came up from last in a field of nine to chalk up the fastest time (2:02 1/2) run by a winner of the event since the first Ham beltonian in 1926, nine years previously. In the 2nd heat. Greyhound was in 2nd place as he came into the stretch, and then, kicking up a cloud of dust, raced past tbo leading horse "Warwell Worthy," and thun dered across the finish line 2 lengths ahead. His time for this 2nd heat was 2:02 3/4. Winning two heats in a row eliminated the need for the 3rd heat and Greyhound added the winner's purse of $18,670 to his record.
