VINELAND LABORATORIES DEVELOPS NEW HORMONE V'.: ;v ■ •; Éi ; ip 1 * I Ï: m f i After more than two years of laboratory research and farm test ing on over a half million birds, Vineland Poultry Laboratories has announced a revolutionary new concept in the field of hormonizing poultry. The new product, called CAPONADE, is a liquid hormone— in contrast to the pellets, paste or oils that have heretofore been available to the poultry industry. This liquid, upon injection, be comes a gelatinous mass as soon as it hits the body fluids of the bird. Some of the hormo.ie (die thylstilbestrol) is immediately re leased into the blood stream of the bird, stimulating feed intake. The balance is slowly released over a period of weeks. , "The advantages of CAPONADE over known methods of dlethyl stilhestrol implantation are imme diately apparent," commented Dr. A. D. Goldhaft, director of the Laboratories. "This hormone liq uid, used in the VINELAND syringe, permits a speed and eco nomy of operation that promises to completely revolutionize the hormone treatment of poultry." CAPONADE was developed from a long series of experiments de liberately designed to overcome all the known defects of products used heretofore. Vineland Poultry Laboratories sought a product that was inexpensive, swift in applica tion and complete and dependable in results. It should release the hormone immediately after injec tion but maintain a reserve which would be effective over a period of time sufficient to allow a bird to acquire proper "finish". That unre lenting search culminated in CA PONADE. The application of CAPONADE brings a dramatic upswing in feed consumption within 36 to 48 hours after treatment, followed prompt and uniform comb shrink age. Weight climbs rapidly, with gains of one-quarter to one pound over untreated birds. "One of the most striking fea tures of CAPONADE is its versa tility," said Dr. Goldhaft. by By a simple adjustment of the auto matic syringe growers can estab lish the optimum level for best suits. A six mgm, dose will give a six-week-old bird a quick boost for early marketing; a 10 mgm. dosage is fine for birds from six to eight weeks old that will be marketed between nine and 11 weeks, while a 15 mgm. dose at eight weeks or more will result in a well-developed bird with top finish in four to six weeks." re Since CAPONADE is a liquid— a liquid that form a plastic'globule beneath the skin of the neck as soon as it hits the body fluids, it conforms to the spqce that is avail able to it. This smooth-surfaced glob has no rough edges, so there is no walling off by body tissues to prevent steady, even release of the hormone. It's absorption into the blood stream is uniform, and little or no hormone residue remains in the bird to cause marketing problems. Vineland Poultry Laboratories has prepared a new four-page fold er describing CAPONADE. It in cludes such details as the method of use, how and why CAPONADE produces outstanding results, plus some down-to-earth reports on ac tual field tests on thousands of birds. "CAPONADE is a completely new type of hormone product,!' Dr. Goldhaft declared, "not only In physical form but in its chemi cal compositiofi. It marks markable step forward in stimu lating the growth of broilers and roasters, and the acquiring of un ' usual market finish." VINELAND , CAPONADE is a specially formulated liquid, each cubic centimeter of which contains 60 milligrams of diethylstilbestrol, a synthetic, non-toxic chemical having activities similar to that of a re . VINELAND CAPONADE is^ ad ministered by injection into the neck of the chicken. Any ordinary syringe can be used—however, for convenience of handling and for efficiency of operation, it is recom mended that a special stainless steel automatic syringe, developed by Vineland Poultry Laboratories, be used. One loading of this syringe (which is fitted with a one-inch, 16 guage needle) will treat 500 birds with a 15 mgm. dose, 750 birds with a 10 mgm. dose, and 1250 birds with a 6 mgm. dose. VINELAND CAPONADE will not spoil. It does not require refrig eration. It does' not require any special handling. It is as effective in hot weather as in cold. When CAPONADE is injected into male birds, they lose their typically male characteristics and take on the appearance of pullets; the wattles and Shriveled and faded; crowing; fighting among the birds slops almost completely. The cock erels acquire a rounded, full breasted appearance with fat de posited in the musculature. The skin becomes smooth and glossy, and the meat becomes juicy and tender, with an improved flavor. When straight run flocks CAPONADED, there is no down grading of the flock because of "riding" of the pullets by the cock erels. Their normal sexual activi ty has been subdued. Pullets materially benefit from a CAPONADE injection, too. They seem to mature more quickly; they put on more weight, and have a more desirable finish than untreat ed birds. They acquire the finish one expects of a ready-to-lay pul combs become they stop are let. Where To Inject VINELAND CAPONADE Is In jected in the loose skin of the back of the neck of the bird as near to the base of the skull as possible, never more than one inch below the base of the skull. This is to make certain that any possible residue is removed with the head and discarded when the bird is dressed for market. Young pullets and cockerels treated with CAPONADE show marked increase in feed consump tion with 36 to 48 hours after treat ment, and as a result, will add weight rapidly. A CAPONADED bird should gain from one-quarter to one pound more weight than an untreated bird. a What Dosage To Use 1. For birds six weeks of A 6 mgm. dose of CAPONADE is sufficient to give these small broilers a quick profitable increase in weight so they may be marketed sooner than untreated birds, or if kept for the usual number of weeks, will dress out heavier than will untreated birds. 2. For birds from six to eight weeks of age: A 10 mgm. dose of CAPONADE is recommended for birds of this age where the intention is to ket the broilers between 9 and 11 weeks of age. 3. For birds eight weeks of and older; The ideal time to use CAPON ADE is on birds of eight to 10 weeks of age. A single 15 mgm dose of CAPONADE administered at this age will result in a well developed bird with good finish ready to be marketed in 4 to 6 weeks. If larger, heavier birds desired, a second 15 mgm. injec tion of CAPONADE at 12 to 14 weeks of age will produce an un usually tender roaster of excellent flavor that can be marketed at 15 to 17 weeks of age. Regardless of what dosage is de sired—6 mgm., mgm.—it all comes out of the same bottle. There Is only one CAPONADE product, and by a simple adjustment of the syringe, the dosage is set. age: mar age are 10 mgm. or 15 private physicians and voluntary health agencies.
