Following the annual Harvest Home Services held in Old Prince George's Chapel near Dagsboro, on Sunday. October 3rd, Rectors of the Episcopal Churches in Sussex County met for a discussion earning the current integration controversy. A statement was drawn up and signed by the Rec tors in attendance. The statement follows : con "We, the Episcopal Clergy of Sussex County, reaffirm the ancient Christian Doctrine of the Father hood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. If God is not the God of Tth® Negro, neither is He the God of the white. If He is not the God of all. He is not the God of any. The Book of the Acts of the Apostles is explicit on this sub ject. In Acts 17-26, "God hath made of one Mood all nations of men for to dwell on the face of the earth." Also in St. Paul's Epis tle to the Romans—Romans 13-8— the same conviction is expressed, not to mention other passages where these same truths equally clear. We remepiber that Jesus Christ was crucified by a mob because He refused to set one class above an other. The following resolution was passed by the Dover District Min isterial Association of the Metho dist Church meeting at Bethel Methodist Church ih Bethel, Del aware, October 4, 1954: ''We, the ministers of the Dover District of the Peninsula Confer ence of the Methodist Church issue the following statement of our be liefs and convictions in regard to the current situation concerning racial integration In the public schools of the State of Delaware The Christian faith Is based on the tenet that God is the Father and Jesus Christ the Brother of all men. As Christians we acknowl edge our brotherhood with all members of the human matter what their color. The Methodist Church declares that "to discriminate against a per son solely upon the basis of his race Is both unfair and unchristian. Every child of God is entitled to that place in society which he has race no won by his industry and character. To deny him that position of honor because of the accident of his birth is neither honest democracy or good religion." (Paragraph 2027, page 661, of the 1952 Discipline of the Methodist Church)) Our nation was founded on the democratic principles of freedom, equality, and respect for human dignity. Our laws, both state and federal, uphold these principles: and our citizens are a law-abiding people. Tradition and practice have not always conformed to these basic religious and political principles. Progress can be made, however, though the adjustments are diffi cult. Changed attitudes will emerge from thoughtful and conscientious consideration of the issue. The duty and responsibility of all Americans is to put into daily prac tice now the highest standards of their religious faith and national law. The problem of integration of races in the school system can be solved when sincere effort is based on this foundation. This body of Methodist minis ters calls upon the people of church to take the lead in applying the Christian spirit to the study and necessary solution of the prob lem of race relations." our THE NAME LINGERS ON COLUMBUS.
