The statement made that the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, Mount Vernon Council, would hold their ladies' reception in Washington Hall last night was an erroneous one. The social will take place next Tuesday, and an en joyable evening is promised, as good talent has been secured, among them being Messrs. Frank and George Dcpro, the well-known comedians. Those quarterly receptions have been largely attended, -and the monthly stag parties never failed to bring out the members and their friends. Ho is wanted hero for the forgery of a check for S20 on Darius Baldwin, the South Washington grocer. The name of J. W. Morris, the patent attornoy, was signed to the check, on which it is alleged he got ft lot of groceries and money. Mr. Coflln has been in Now York for two weeks and he told Detective Mat tiugly that as soon as he heard of tho charge against him ho started back to Washington to answer it. He did not have the money to pay his faro ond ho sold his clothing to buy a ticket. Collin was locked up in the First Precinct Station to await an investigation of the charge. Today was the fourth day of the Mc Clelland manslaughter trial in the Crim inal Court and considerable of the morn ing session was taken up with tho cross examination of tho defendant by District Attorney Cole. Tlio witness told of on assault that Benton committed upon him in Cohen's saloon on Virginia avenue, and thai tho proprietor had to pui, Ben ton out and keep his place closed up for two hours in order to avoid a disturbance Benton also assaulted him at tho corner of Seventh and D streets south west shortly beforo this and declared his intention of doing him up. McClelland testified that ho was not owore neither did ho supposo that Benton was jealous of his (McClelland's) atten tions to his wife. He admitted that he had met her quite frequently beforo tho shooting and several times after he had been admitted to bail, but he thought ho had a right to as she was living apart from her husliand. McClelland stated in direct testimony that he had never pulled a revolver on any ono in his life, but acknowledged to having had somo trouble with n man at Fanny Blair's that did not amount to much, William C. Drury, the commission merchant, was called to testify as to tho characterof Benton, but District Attorney Colo objected to its admissibility. Mr. Smith argued that it was proper to show that Benton was a dangerous person, but Judge Bradley sustained tlio objection, John II. Mugg swore lie was present In a restaurant on Seventh street, when Benton was beating his wife, Ho aud McClelland separated them and Benton accused McClelland of hitting him In tlio head with a catsup bottlo aud threatened that he would get oven with him. Nathan Cohen testified as to tho threats made by Benton toward McClelland in his saloon on Virginia avenue. Ho used vilo names, and said lie would get satisfaction if it cost him his life.
