Banks of the River St. Ann Cayo In, Causing Great Destruction. Quebec, April 30. Friday night at about 8.S0 o'clock tho inhabitants of the Tillage of St. Albans, situated about forty-Are miles lrom here, and four miles from Iiaehretrro tiere Station, in the county of Tort Neuf, beard a terrific noise resembling tho roll of thunder in the distance. The soil vibrated and panic ensued. The people believing tho ground was going to open under tbcm rushed away as fast as they could. Near the parish church is a curve in tho river St. Ann which makes n waterfall. Tho sides of tho river, composed cf clay, cavod in, blocking up the natural chunnel of the river for a distauco of lire miles and to a depth of 17 feet, making thf water rlso a hundred feet above the earth walU that were supposed to bold it back. Tho walls were not strong enough to keep in check tho fury of the stream, and wltn a terriDie roar anu rusn me water came down upon tho unprotected vil lage, carrying away the bridge. At 10 o'clock p. m. the water rose at St. Casmlerr, and carried awny another bridge at St. Ann. At 11 o'clock it carried away two piers of tho bridge and all the lumber booms, along with the wharves. The house of a farmer named Ganthier, at St. Albans, is completely burled, and the four unfortunate people who occupied it ore sup posed to be crushed beneath the ruins. At the place where tho houso was buried smoke can be seen, and it is feared tho house caught fire, which means sure death to the lnmatc3 that were known to have been within. The accident bos been especially severe on the dumb animals. Hundreds of cattle, sbeepL and pigs have perished, and amid tho wreck age which floats post the poor brutes can bo seen struggling, apparently making an effort to reach tho ahoro. which their exhaustion f renders abortive. 1U cr Noire, the exact placoof the accident, is not near u telegraph station, and no in formation as to tho number and names of tho dead can yet be bad with certainty. The peo ple of all the surrounding districts aro panio. stricken, and on account of tho alfred con dition of tho country it is very difllcult to reach the scene and return. Tho piece of land which slid Into tho river is about ,.i mile long and four miles wide. Tho latest In formation recehod Is to the effect that SM0,- 000 worth of proporty has been destrojod and twelro people hao boen killed. BLAINE-BEALE WEDDING. The most wonderful of all the Clothing Sales of 'the present century began here Saturday Morning. ,' The reasons are these: Our large factory in Syracuse, N. Y., was forced to shut down on account of the delay in settling the tariff question. We made up all the materials on hand, so as to keep our force busy as long as possible, but it was no use, the delay was too long. There's been a complete annihilation of honest 'clothing values. We've got to convert this tremen dous output into cash at once. Dollars did wonders Saturda'; it's the same way to-day will be so to-morrow, and until the stock's depleted. Don't miss it!
