The lowest prices for many weeks were
reached in the stock market yesterday
morning The Steel securities went
lower than they ever have sold before
since they were introduced to the public
and the grangers and many other railway
securities at their lowest prices were
oft from 15 to 30 or more points from the
best levels of a few vvefks ago Later In
the day there was a sharp recovery all
over the llt but the efforts of the open
ing drive were not all dispelled and the
close was generally at a lower level than
that of last Saturday There Is ffothlng
new In the situation the news yester
day relating entirely ttf the weather con
ditions in the West to the Stie1 strike
and to the monetary situation upon
which three factors the market fortunfs
depend in large measure The telegrams
from the corn belt are various in their
nature elependln to a large extent on the
wish of the tenders and the recipients
but the general lmpresion In conserva
tive quarters seems to be that the
chances for general rains are now good
and that the crop damages have been
exaggerated The monetary situation Is
distinctly more reassuring The public
seems to have lost sympathy with the
steel strikers to a certain extent and the
street begins to believe that the strike
will not be likely- to elo the big trust
much elamage Many market people are
saying now that after the great drop in
prices of the first half Of the mo lth a
good rally is elu and short salei are
dangerous Some careful people will ouy
stocks discriminatingly from this tlTie
on on the declines confident that the
tendency is likely to bo upward in many
issues
The present level of prices Is a very
different one from thit of a month ago
The Steel lsues are much more attrac
tive below 40 and SO than they were above
50 and par Union Pacific Is much more
reasonable below 90 than It was 40 point
higher Atchison common paying J per
cent and earning 7 Is not a very unrea
sonable proportion In the COs though In
th 60s It was a gamble that careful peo
ple did not care to touch The pre
icired stock selling where the common
did a month or so ago looks cheap and
so do Pennsylvania at 140 and Reading
first preferred at 74 and Erie first pre
ferred at C3 It seems probable that for
a time the market may be rather dull
but the trcnel of rnices shoulel he tnsvnni
a higher level especially if the weather
Improves Immediately in the corn and
wheat belts
Mr Keent is undoubtedly on the bull
side of the market for one reason or an
other He and his lieutenants are having
themselves quoted as bullish He said to
a reporter on Sunday that he believed the
crop damage stories to be largely exag
gerated and yesterday Mr Taylor said to
a friend that in his opinion stocks are a
purchase from this time on Mi Keenes
contract with Mr Morgan to hold up the
price of the Steel securities has not yet
run out unci his belief in higher prices
throughout the list may possibly have
something to do with this but even so It
is not a bad thing to be on the same
side with Mr Kecne If one can be sure
which way he Is trading There were evi
dences too that Messrs Ilarriman
Rockefeller and Gould were supporting
their respective securities yesterday morn
ing which Is encouragingras these people
did little If anything to prevent the break
up to yesterday Londons attitude yes
terday was instructive It contributed to
the break In the morning by selling some
thing like 23000 shares of stocks but

it may be estimated from the eleven

THE CHICAGO GRAIN MAKKET
Heavy Lleiiildntleiii Uclt In Both
AVhent rinil Ciirn
CHICAGO July 15 Wheat was firm
early with corn and steady Liverpool ca
bles which were Hel higher When corn
weakened wheat quickly followed and de
clined 2 centsT Owing to the heavy cov
ering of shorts on Friday and Saturday
the market was in a weak speculative
condition and local traders took advan
tage of it and sold freely Commission
house trade was light and featureless
With the exception of the 1 irge primary
receipts statistical returns were bullish
Clearances wereTOOOOO bushels Seaboard
reported IC loads
Corn opened higher because there was
practically no change In the Western sit
uation but the market felt the effect of
Saturday s heavy liquidation and grad
ually weakened The bears were more
courageous and sold on reports of scat
tered showers In Kansas and Nebraska
There was a lack of support and the
market acted as though there was still a
liberal long interest On the decline a few
local bulls took tuck some of their lines
The heavy outside trade so conspicuous
last week was absent Local stocks of
corn Increased 339Wi0 bushels The visibly
supply decreased 405000 bushels Country
acceptances are a little larger There was
no cash business Receipts were ISO with
590 cars estimated for tomorrow
Oats opened strong but turned easier
with corn There was no special feature
to the trade The outside continues a
fair buyer The closing was fairly strong
and is showing a disposition to act inde
pendent of other grains Local stocks
of oats decreased 724 000 bushels The v Isl
ble supply decreased 1177000 bushels Re
ceipts were 104 with 150 estimated for
tomorrow
There was a weak opening In provi
sions Commission houses told rather
freely then and throughout the day for
scattered longs vyho were influenced by
the large hog mot ement lower prices for
same and easier grain markets Packers
started buying at the early decline and
this demand caused tr partial reaction and
the market closed steady Todays cash
trade was moderate

The Origin
of Disease
The real enemies of man are the small
est forms of life The Germ has slain Its
millions Like the fabled monsters of old
its food Is human flesh its drink is hu
man blood It fattens and nourishes on
slaughter For centuries medicfl science
fought this foe in a rrkness Its presence
was known its deadliness conceded But
if was Invisible unknown unnamed
Then came tre announcement or Prof
Ilobert Koch fit 1S9C that he had found
the bacillus of Consumption Following
It In rapid succession covering the ten
years intervening came other discoveries
Bacteriologists all over the world were
spurred on to renewed and determined
effort One by one the bacilli of all other
diseases except scarlet fever measles
and smallpox have been discovered
The origin of disease is no longer a
mystery It is now established that al
most every form of disease Is caued by
the introduction Into the system of cer
tain minute poisonous organisms
