extent a natural sequence of the mid

sized by renewed belling chlelly from
Chlcigo where crop condillors are the
domnant faelor influencing speculative
sentiments Something of the nine ton
dftion of affair has developed on the
floor of the stock exchange owing to
the present juxtaposition of the exchange
to the produce exchmge
It Is to be hoped that the professional
dialers In stocks will not in consequence
of their present close touch with the grain
market be betrijcd Into accepting as
mrrow a view of the commercial and
financial conditions of the country as usu
ally prevails in speculative circles in Chi
cago It would be foolish to minimize the
Impi rtance to the United States of Its
corn crop and equally absurd to ignore
the fict that the crop has been materially
damaged In certain sections At the same
time the country Is not going to be demor
alize J or even seriously disturbed should
this j ears jleld of corn be even 23 per

duction of loans brings that Item down

The banks are unquestionably in a
strong position -with prospects of further
Improvement It would not be surprising
If their surplus and loan accounts should

of the three stocks named and resulted
in net declines of more than three peuits
The shires of the Western trunk lines
tint are less extensively dealt in namel
Itock Island and Chicago and
to the same extent Selling of
Southern Pacific encountered some oppo
sition and In consequence it rallied neirlv
a point and closed only fractionally lower
than last night Of course tlie entire list
was unsettled by the vigorous drive
against the Western trunk line shares
and declines of a point cr mere were
common
The United States Steel stoees were not

suffered by the susoenslon of operations
at the mills of the three companies affect
ed by the strike It is possible however
that there may be moderate accumulation
of raw material If the strike should be
protracted The demand for finished
products Is brisk and prices are well
maintained
General business according to tiade re
ports has not been repressed nor cur
tailed by prospects cf daring- to the corn
crop nor by the varlvas lahor troubles
There has been some cancellation ot or
ders for fall goods at Chicago and at St
Louis but these have been modified dur

points Bank clearings arfd railway earn

tendency of business as compared with
last sear
As to the speculative outlook the liqui
dation of the laot few weeks appears to
have been unusually thorough and at the
same time a large short Interest has been
created The decline In prices has with
out doubt facilitated progress in the work
of combining various transportation sys
tems and an Indication of the surprises
that are In store for the public mav be
found in the announcement regarding the

The past week has been a most Inter
esting one in the stock market with much
of news and gossip to influence specula
tion and many peojde of Importance In
the financial world willing to speculate
It lias lieen a somewhat unusual week for
midsummer which as a general rule fur
nishes nothing more entertaining than the
small ups and downs of a professional
traders market On the whole it will
probablj be agreed by conservative peo
ple everywhere that under the circum
stances the showing made hs been a
handsome one Prices during the early
part of the week after a sham decline on
Mondav made excellent and almost sen
sational aavances inere nas oeen some
recession since Thursdaj but the net
movement since Monday Is nevertheless
strongly Jn the right direction This is as
It si ould be all things considered and it
maj be Inferred that careful people have
been fairly well satisfied
At the beginning of the new fiscal jear
three weeks ago the price level was ex
tremely high and well informed financial
men pointed out the numerous matters
that suggested a decline of importance
Talk of the dry and hot weather In the
AVcst wns already heard The bank state
ments for a long time had been bad and
the outlook financially was poor There
was theprobablity of trouble with labor
In various parts of the country These
things were not good for a bull maiket
with a high level of prices in July The
decline came sharp and decisive Tor two
weeks or more prices went oft steadily
and a long way The fear of a drought
in the corn belt was realized and the ap
prehension of a strike of the steel work
ers proved to be well founded People
that had bought stocks at a very high
level soldlhem out with bigger or smaller
losses but almost alwavs with losses of
some kind There was a eeneral liquida
tion In which some of the most important
Interests In the country took part It was
in this condition that the market ap
peared a week ago A halt was called
then by the Important Interests and since
that time the level of prices has been re
rnwrinr with fair regularity The break
had been sufficient In the opinion of many
careful people and a grcat many securi
ties looked like bargains The Insiders
supported their specialties and the bar
gain hunters bought the attractive stocks
The great community of Interests plan
was announced to be successful to help
along the bull movement and it proved
a verj attractive argument perhaps quite
as productive of results as the fact that
prices had had a large tumble The mon
etary situation became much more satis
factory and helped along the market ap
preciably
Meanwhile the corn crop is still in dan
ger and apparently already badly hurt
and the strike of the steel workers is
growing no less serious A good many
people believe that It will be a long drawn
out and that It Is a menace to the busi
ness interests of the entire country
With these two serious adverse conditions
in the bituatlon as against general busi
ness prosperity easy money and the suc
cess of the community of Interests plan
it will be seen that the market situation
after the sh irp recov ery of prices Is a
most complex one For the present it
seems that some further reaction will
be likely Tatcr marked developments
will hinge on the news to a great
extent and it is out of the question to
foretell the result with any certainty
Fluctuations up and down of some magni
tude are not unlikely but as far as can
be Judged now the chances would seem
to favor the purchase of stocks on the
sharp reactions
The bank statement jesterday was
again most satisfactory Following the
exceptional showing of a week ago It Is
almost remarkable Two weeks ago the
bank reserve was down to J3t000 and it
was feared by many that it would be
entirely wlpeel out Last weeks state
ment showe d an increase In cash of more
than JSOoOOCO a decrease In loans of 21
OOOIXO the largest on record and a con
sejuent Increase In resnes of J7300KO
making the total surplus reserve at th it
time about 13000X0 Yesterdays state
ment was quite as good showing an in
crease in cash of 16000000 a decrease In
deposits of S500000 and a consequent in
crease in reserves of more than J80000O0
The surplus reserves are therefore
more than J21O0OO00 at the present time
The figures of the statement were as fol
lows
Reserves lncrcaseil JS220000
Loans decreased 1221900
Specie increases SiylOO
Legal tenders Increased 918 000
Deposits decreased Ti S4SSS00
Circulation Increased 80000
The Increase In cash Is due to large re
ceipts from the Interior and to receipts
also from the Sub Treasury The latter
exhibit a considerable change of condi
tions the flow of money having been In
the opposite direction -pretty steadily for
a long time back The decrease In loans
shown Ik perhaps largely the result ot the
liquidation of more than a week ago It
was believed when the last statement was
made th it on account of the average svs
tem of computation it did not exhibit the
full amount of liquidation that had taken
plsee Money has been easy all the past
wjek and the outlook is fairly good for a
continuance of this condition for a month
or so or until the demand from the In
terior for the movement of the crops be
gins to be felt largely
Curiously enough the present disaster
to the corn crop will affect practically the
very sroup of railways that hive en
tered this community of Interests plan
It will be seen that this fact makes the
outlook of these lines for the coming
year one of intense Interest to all stu
dents of nllvvay affairs and of railway
security aues In the Immediate futute
prices will depend directly on the out
come of the rorn crop news The crop
Is likely to be less th in l7000000fi0 bushels
It Is said or the smallest for several
vcars Further continuation of the
drourht will result In a still greater de
terioration of the crop This Is a
of the utmost Importance of course
It Is made doubly so by the fact that the
granger securities are selling at a very
lilgh level They are much lower than
they were n few weeks ago but much
higher than at any other time in recent
jears or since 1881 In fact Two great
factors are likely to minimize the dam-

age that a poor corn crop will do to the
railwajs of the Weet One of these Is
that the business of the lines In general
Is much more diverlfieel than ever be
fore and that the proportion of corn
to the entire freight business of any of
the lines is comparatively small It is
estimated that on the average the corn
hauled bv the lines is onlv about 6 per
cent of their entire freight The other
factor of moment in the situation will
be the new community of Interests If
this plan will do what is hoped of It It
will prevent the disastrous rate cutting
tint might be expected to follow anv Im
portant decrease In the volume of busi

It will be remembered that the prices of
July 13 Saturday a week ago were not
the lowest of the break the culmination
of which came last Monday in general
It will be seen that prices have advanced
since last Saturday The advance is much
more important since the lowest prices
were renchcel The grangers and the Steel
securities naturally enough nre the
weakest groups In the list because of the
crop disaster and the steel strike The
Southern securities and the Gould stocks
have been strong
The most Important single event of the
week undoubtedly was the announcement
of the success of the harmony negotia
tions In the West ensuring for all prac
tical purposes one great central manage
ment for almost all the railvvajs bejond
the Mississippi If the trust Idea Is a
good one in a business way if It restricts
competition prevents rate cutting pre
vents new construction curtails expenses
and In general tends to Increase gross
business and net receipts then this com
munity of Interests in the Western rail
wavs may be said to be one of the most
important developments the railway busi
ness ever saw The plan has been an
alyzed by the shrew elest and most ex
perienced men in the financial world and
b the theorists and the universal belief
is that it offers great promise of solving
a number of the difficult problems that
have grown up In the business during the
past decade and of making an era of
great prosperity ror the raiiwajs
There has bcn a disposition in some
quarters to give as much importance to
the news of drought in the cotton belt as
to that in the West As a result the
Southern Hallway Louisville and Nash
ville Chesapeake and Ohio and other
Southern and Southwestern securities
while not as weak as the grangers in the
recent break were sold off rather badly
and have not recovered with any great
animation In the subsequent boom Some
of the experts in railway and financial
matters believe that this view Is ill-founded
and that these securities will be likely
to make an excellent showing In the
coming j ear The cotton crop may be
small but up point this would
be a good thing for the South generally
ensuring high prices for the staple It Is
not jet clear that this point will be
passed In any event the era of prosper
lt Is well established throughout the sec
tion and the raiiwajs have obtained a
magnificent start which it will be hard
to overcome In this connection an article
based on statistics from the Textile
World j ear book for 1901 published else
MHere In todajs Times Is most Interest
lrrB as showing the Immense Increase In
cotton manufacturing in the South in the
past j ear The following figures Just
published by Scott Strlngfellow tho
Richmond brokers arc also worthy ot
careful attention
The Southern States during the past
four j ears have produced 75 per cent of
the worlds supply of cotton and the ex
ports of cotton from the United States
far exceed In value those of any other
product In the settlement of balances
due by our countrj abroad our exports of
cotton are Indispensable for we can onlj
rely upon the money from our exports of
cotton every J ear while no other product
of the soil can be depended upon with the
same cerlalntj
It Is cejually Interesting to note that
from a manufacturing standpoint the
South is forging to the front e g we
give below a table of the worlds cotton
bpindles In 1900 as compared -with 1S93

During Lie same period the number of
looms in Southern cotton mills have In
creased 30600 or 91 per cent and the
taking of cotton for home consumption
has Increased 740593 bales or S7 per cent
consequently the South is beginning to
realize that the raw material can be
manufactured into the finished product
as cheaply in Its own borders ns It can
elsewhere and thus keep at home the
monej that heretofore has been sent
aw a j for the purchase of cotton goods
The outlook for tho Southern Pacific
for the coming jear Is most interesting
To a certain extent this system Is In
both the corn belt and the cotton belt
and It might bo Inferred that It will suf
fer more than nearly any other lines In
the West or South for this reason if both
crops should suffer Undoubtedly
a short cgrn crop and a failure of cot

It Is probable that it covers too wide a

tho failure of even two such Important
crops for one jear The position of
the company has been wondcrfullj Im
proved during the past jear in nay
Large amounts of money have been ex

made with other sj stems The Southern
Pacific too will be one of the lines to be
most benefited by the stabilltj of rates
to be brought about by the community of

and California will be a factor of in
creasing Importance to the sjstem In
the one Item ot the substitution of oil for
coal as fuel the company will save several
millions cf dollars a year It is said
The Steel securities have been supported
well bj the Keene clique and their fluc

common and the preferred will be upheld
persistently by this clique with Its
J2MJ fund even If the strike
continues for some time longer In
the event of a betterment of the
situation manj people bellevo tint
thej will be advanced to a much better
level In the near future The rreferrcd
seems likely to bo the stronger of the
two on account f investment bujlng
that is verj likely to show Itself as long
