opening In the stoek market this morning
after the uncertain tone to Its dosing last
night Preceding the opening here Lon
don sent In sharp advances throughout
the railway list which -v ere alleged to
be based on reports of soaking rains
throughout tho corn belt
Following the opening

siles with Chicago offerings ery much
reduced as compared with the prices o
the last six or seven dajs The opening
demand in this market appeared to be
largely Inspired by the anxiety of bear
traders to coicr short commitments The
tone of the market durlns the first half
hour reflected a disposition to await the
opening of the grain markets Stocks
hardened when grain was offered down
on the curb and there was further Im
provement accompanj Irg the sharp break
of almost 5 cents In the price of Septem
ber corn
Throughout the session however storks
continued to follow In Inverse order the
movements In corn Substantially every
fluctuation In corn was Immediately re
flected by a movement in the opposite di
rection In the grangers The news re
garding tho weather was extremely con
flicting and the early reports of copious
rains throughout the West were at direct
variance with private despatches from
Chicago
Obviously there was considerable ma
nipulation this morning In both the stock
and grain markets The selling pressure
was less In evidence today than for some
time and there was a more pronounced
tendency of prices to harden on rumors of
f a orable dev elopments
Wall Streets are ery much
mixed at present regarding the Immediate
outlook The speculative position has ap
parently been strengthened by the elimi
nation of a large number of weak mar
gin accounts The monetary situation as
reflected by the rates for call money and
the market for sterling exchange Indi
cates easy conditions for the near future
The labor situation appears to be ery
much clearer Inasmuch as the strikes In
the anthracite coal regions have been
settled advantageously to the operators
while the hope Is general that the United
States Steel Corporation will win out In
its difficulty
The uncertain factor exists In the crop
situation and it Is conceded that the
damage to corn has been very serious
while the outlook is still threatening
Conservative Judges have cut down thcii
eEtTmates of the torn jield to 160000000
bushels or less In Wall Street how
ever exaggeration is alleged and It ap
pears reasonable to believe that In the
demand for sensationalism the growing
crops have In all probability suffered In
a way that has not been justified by the
actual facts and this particularly applies
to wheat
The West was not so aggressive today
in the stock market and at times there
was a decided scarcity of stocks offering
From time to time the market would
rally quickly but It was also clear that
the leading market Interests were not
disposed to Institute a vigorous upward
movement at the moment
Opening gains were most pronounced In
the grangers and the lacldc stocks St

The changes In -other directions were In
niost cases fractional and without espe
cial significance except In Sugar which
displaed considerable strength and ad
vanced during the morning The rise In
that quarter was based on the announce
ment of the new issue of stock by tne
American Sugar Refining Company which
will carry subscription rights to stock
holders The Steel shares were well sup
ported during thi day and at times
moved up rather easllv but the fluctua
tions were not notably broad At noon
it was stated that the Northern Pacific
board of directors with the changes as
indicated by Sir Slorgan a week ago had
been elected and this served to harden
the tone of the marKet which however
subsequently became dull and almost
featureless
London traded in 60000 shares buying
20000 on balance The afternoon rally was
attributable to the renewed weakness in
corn and vpqrted improving weather
conditions
There was general covering and traders
were disposed to take the lone side for
a turn on the theory that the marktt had
been oversold Firmness In the Steels
was inspired by favorable reports bear
ing on the strike

During the afternoon the market was
fairly strong closing with a good net
gain nearly everywhere Dullness ensued
during the last hour but it did not re
sult In a decline as the bears were afraid
to venture sdiort ales In view of the ex
pectation 01 good rains tonight and to
morrow The market continues to be
lomlnatcd by the weather reports
ilmost entirely with the qualification that
the professional have Insisted on read
ng these reports to suit their own Ideas
if what the market should be largely It
sems probable for this reason that the
JownwardT movement of prices may have
Seen too great and that the market is
oversold If the promises of rain In
he corn States are fulfilled there is an
excellent chance for a good and sustained
-ally in prices and it seems not llkely
hat prices will go -much lower in any
cvenL

The crop situation is a most interesting
one The reports jesterday from official
and unofficial sources were various as
td Just how ranch rain there has been
in the corn States but some rain un
doubtedly has fallen In all these States
and more was hoped for at the Weather
Bureau jesrerday afternoon The out
look is better This was the cause of the
break In the erain markets and of the ad
vance in the stock market jesterday
The drought in the corn belt has been
one or the worst tbe country ever experi
enctei For more than a month there has
been almost no rain in the chief corn
States and the temperature has remained
for davs and weeks at a time above
100 with advances at times and in
various places to much above that
level The authorities Government and
unofficial nave dinered much in tneir
estimates of the damage done by the
drought Tho monthly crop report pub
lished on July 10 of the condition on
July 1 shows the corn crop to be Injured
at that time but not necessarily badly
The condition was low compared with
mat lor juiy 1 in recent years out much
better than the condition in 1891 the last
corn crop failure jcar This report was
not well received bv the unofficial crop
expertslt was said by them that while
the figures might be correct for July 1
they did not show any of the damage
done between that date and July 10 the
date of Issue of the report The drought
In reality did not begin to do much Irre
parable damage until after the beginning
of the present month
The recent unofliclil estimates have
been that the crop will likely be cut to

The recent crops have been more than
20uO0JiOCr bushels and these e stlmates
are for a total crop pne tlfth short Some
or the more pessimistic reports nave
placed the damage at even a greater fig
ure than this These however are very
likely taeu on insufficient despatches
from the worst affected States and sec
tions There is little doubt even among
the most optimistic that in some sections
there will not be more than 30 to f per
cent of a crop The weekly report of the
Weather Bureau yesterday afternoon
added little to what had been said

Secretary Wilson of the Agricultural
Department has taken 1 fairly cheerful
view of the situation from the first

Western Kansas Nebraska and the Da

there consequently will be a reduced
yield of those commodities in that sec

Secretary is not at all pessimistic He re
ceives d illy reports by mall and wire from
trained agents of the Agricultural De
partment who are traversing every agri
cultural State and closely studying condi
tions None of the e reports according
to the Secretary Justifies the predictions
of wholesale crop failure In the- West
which are Indulged In by a gret many
farmers and traders and speculators at
the centres of distribution In the month
ly report of the Agricultural Department
for July which will be Issued not earlier
than August 10 Secretary Wilson believes
he will be able to show that the situation
Is not as bad as it is being pictured at
present
The Secretary is especially hopeful of
an average corn crop He savs It will not
be a record breaker or a bumper In
the parlnnee of the Agricultural Depart
ment but that at this moment the
favor a fair average vield
Little was reported yesterday aside from
the weather news of Interest to the stock
market The steel strike situation Is not
growing any better and the arrest of
several workmen jesterday was regarded
as presaging possible trouble of a seri
ous kind The steI strike iiuy soon
assume the position of the matter of first
Importance In the stuck market situation
even outranking the corn crop news If
this occurs It wip be because the strike
la growing worse and not better The
street has pot looked for

gains and closing at the top prices for
the day The outlook for these securities
is considered excellent by many careful
people
The Baltimore and Ohio directors have
declared the regular dividends on both the
common and the preferred stocks No In
crease in the common stock dividend
should be expected this year
The Atchison net earnings report for the
month of June and for the twelve months
will be Issued In a few davs It should
prove a bullish argument on the securi
ties of the company as its showing will
be magnificent Something between 7 and
8 per cent has been earned on the com
mon stock
The Steel securities were again steady

above 40 and the preferred ndvancing a

port of these securities leads many to be
lieve that the syndicate manipulating

of weakness In coarse grains and a fail
ure of Liverpool to respond to our ad
vance very nearly all of yesterdays Im
provement in wheat was lost There was
a fair rally about noon on good local
bujlng but when corn weakened wheat
sympathized and declined sharply Pri
mary receipts were large clearances
670000 bushels There was nothing re
ported in the cash line
Corn opened panicky and weak on news
paper reports of rain in the Missouri Val
ley The over bought condition of the
market made It difficult to execute selling
orders A sharp rally followed the early
decline on fairly good local buvlng On
predictions of the break in the drought
within forty eight hours by a prominent
weather prophet the bears took courage
and raided the market dislodging long
corn in every direction There was no
cash business Receipts were 2SS cars
with 170 estimated
Oats opened lower with corn There was
general execution of stop loss orders by
commission houses On the decline the
market received good local support which
brought about a good rally They closed
easier in sympathy with the late weak
ness in corn Receipts were 143 cars with
70 estimated
IroviIons have held fairly steady all
day Trere was a little easier feeling
soon after the opening In svmpathy with
grain but soon firmed up on buvlng of

The weekly Government weather crop
bulletin Issued yesterday afternoon sum
marized the crop situation as follows
Intense heat has prevailed another
week throughout the States of the cen
tral vallejs and middle Rocky Mountain
region with only local showers over
limited scattered areas Maximum tem
peratures of 100 degrees or above were
of dally occurrence over more or less of
the territory named Under these condi
tions the drought has been greatly In
tensified and Us area largely Increased
Missouri Kansas Oklahoma and
tlons of Nebraska have suffered most
but the conditions are now critical from
the Lake region Central Ohio Valley and
Tennessee westwnrd to the middle Rocky
Mountain region Including the greater
part of Texas Portions of the Middle
and South Atlantic States continue to
suffer from excessive moisture but very
favorable temperatures have been ex
perienced In these districts and also on
the Pacific Coast where the week was
cooler than usual
The outlook for corn is less favorable
than at the close of the previous week
In Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma and
Missouri early com Is practically ruined
With early and abundant rains In these
States late corn would probably make
halt a crop or less The condition of the
crop in Iowa is more favorable than In
the before mentioned Stntes and copious
rains with moderate temperatures within
n week would greatly Improve prospects
for a large part of the crop In Illinois
Indiana Ohio Kentucky and Tennessee
more particularly the western portions of
the two last named States corn Is now
seriously in need of rain In Illinois the
crop has not yet sustained great damage
but will be materially reduced unless the
drought Is relieved within a week In
the Middle Atlantic States the conditions
have been highly favorable for corn and
its condition Is further Improved
Moisture has caused considerable injury
to winter wheat In shock in the Middle
Atlantic States Harvesting continues
where unfinished In th more northerly
sections cast of the Rocky Mountains
and Is In general progress on the North
Piclfic Coast
Spring wheat harvest has begun over
the southern portion of the spring wheat
region where as a result of premature
ripening the lcld and quality Is much
Impaired Over the northern portion
where the crop Is now ripening its con
dition continues promising
Harvested oats have suffered some In
Jury In shock from moisture in the Mid
dle Atlantic States and the unharvested
crop from premature ripening In the
Northwest while rust has caused injury
in New York and Pennsylvania Good
Melds are reported from the upper Ohio
Valley
Hnjlng Is mostly finished and a fine
crop has been secured In North Dakota
Minnesota tjie Lake region Ohio Valley
portions of the Middle Atlantic States
and New England
In portions of Mississippi Alabama
Georgia and Florida the condition of cot
ton has Improved but In the two last-
named States and in the Carolinas It has
suffered from lack of cultivation Rain
Is greatlj needed In Tennessee and over
the western portion of the cotton belt
where however the crop Is generally
withstanding the drought welL Fruiting
at the top continues to be reported from
the central and western districts and
throughout the belt the plant Is small
In the Ohio Tennessee and Wis
consin tobacco Is sufferings much from
drought especially In Western Kentuckj
and has been Injured by rains In Marj
land elsewhere the crop has made fa
vorable progress
