The Commissioners jestcrdaj through
their secretarj communicated with the
members of the Board of Police nnd Fire
Surgeons enclosing a copj of the recent
report from the Chief Engineer cm tho
Fire Department and calling their
tlon to the regulations which are laid
down to guide their- actions The mem
bers of the board were- informed by Sec
retarj Tindall as follows
That jour piramount dutj while a
i surgeon of the Police nnd Fire
i ments Is to render medical and surgical
circ and aid to all members of those de-
partments in need of such assistance
and that a prompt -performance of this
dutj must not be secondarj to jour
vatc practice
Since the publication of Chief Engineer
Duttons report upon the complaint raised
bj Foreman Kuhns relitive to the action
of the surgeons In refusing to attend
the watchman of No 4 Engine
several facts have come to light which
give additional Interest to the assertion
of Dr Clifton Mav field that the remune
ration of the surge cms 340 a jear Is
net sufficient to enable them to place- the
care and aid to the firemen before their
private practice One fact tint has de
veloped is that when the last appoint
ment was made to the Boird of Surgeons
there was great competition for the place
and tint the successful incumbent worked
vcrj hard to secure the npjointment The
remuneration then J4S0 a jear was
thought sufficient to prompt him to put
forth considerable effort to obtain It
Another fact Is that there arc now on file
In the office of the Commissioners 120 ap
plications for appointment to the Board
of Surgeons whenever there is a acancj
A third fact -hat the watchmen In
the Tire Department receive only 5C00
per annum or only 50 more for full time
thin the surgeon for spending on a few
hours each week In the servico or the
