with the bhortage Little elunjre appear
fl this mornlnq in the steel trlke condi
tions but the defection of a mall num
ber of the Carnegie cmplojes creatrd a
dlsagieeable imjirosioa There was hon
eer ery little change in the opinion
that the caue of the strikers was tot
tering to a fall and it Is still believed that
the Amalgamated Association would ery
quickly accept any graceful opportunity
for dtclaring the strike off
The absence of fun her definite Ieel
opxnents and the noted defection of the
Carnegie emplojes led to some selling of
the Steel stocks however and they did not
participate In the fairly buoyant tone
which characterized the early stock mar
ket The less encouraging news regard
ing the strike carritd some cumulative
influence with the course of the busi
ness session moreover and had no lit
tle to do with the slUhtly reactionary ten
dency which developed early In the af
ternoon The day was otherwise devoid
of interesting developments Money on
call was cxtrtmelv csv but a firm tone
continued to prevail for time loans and
there were no offerings under 5 per cent
for long periods There was no percepti
ble alteration In foreign exchane
Few Interesting statements of railway
traffc were submitted but among them
was the report of the Manhattan com
pany for the fiscal jear including of
course the last quarter The showing
was significant in many was gross earn
ings for the quarter increasing about S
per cent for the complete fiscal jear The
surplus after all charges and dividends
amounted to over JWXl as against 109
OOuD last jear With these results while
the elevated lines are operated by steam
power it is interesting to consider what
the results will be under electrical opera
tion Manhattan and the other local
traction stocks were firm toda although
no particular animation appeared in that
quarter
All or tne specialties were
ttnng with rapid advances noted In
General Klectric and Consolidated Gas
The advance in the last named wjs at
tended by a renewal of the reports re
cently current that an etra dividend was
bkely to be declared upon the stock at
the next declaration reriod
As noted the Lnlted States Steel issues
suffered somewhat from the less encour
aging reports from the strike but other
wise the irdustrial quarter shared in the
lirirness of the general market The
United States Leather issues were partic
ularlvifirm and Sugar Hi lining was stead
ier on the denial of the reports regarding
the health of the president of the com
pany
Active interest in the market however
centred upon the railway llt and It was
there that the most extensive movements
of the da were scored St Paul contin
ued the leader of the railway list in all
respects It seems to be the fairly com
mon opinion that the stock will be estab
lished upon a 7 per cent dividend basis in
September nnd In addition reports were
curn nt todav that the management con
templated a division of the companys
surplus between the preferred and com
mon shireholders These reports though
unconfirmed had their effect The nota
blv firm features of the railway list were
Baltimore and Ohio Canadian lacillc
Denver and Rio Grande Norfolk and
Western New York Central nnd Union
Pacific London took a fairly active part
In the local trade and was a buver here
to the extent of nearlj SOOW shares of
stock foreign interest in fet Paul being
eager Houses with Western connections
were also purchasers The covering of
short contracts was generally admitted
as responsible in no small degree for
advances scored

The market jestcrdav was irregular nnd
proftstlonal in the extreme The opening
and earlier business of the day was buoj
ant the lev ei reached being the best in
recent dajs During the atlernoon there
was a recession of some importance so
that at the close the greater part of the
gains had dlsippeareet The public
trauj recognizes a market as
al only when it reacts after an advance
The advance is never looked upon as
the work of professional manipulators
It is nevertheless true that during the
entire week as well as last week and the
weeks for some time before the market
has shown unmistakable evidence of be
ing dominated by the room tradeis large
ly The public j esterdaj morning was be
ginning to consider the market a big bull
affair and was bujing stock fna small
for the first time As soon
as the public bujing began however the
professionals sold out and even went
short Careful market people all nel
vised the taking of profits v csterdaj
morning
The outlook Is for a continuance of this
kind t market for the present On the
recessions there will be goodbuying by
cartful people but thej will not grow
enthusiastic over the little advances and
purchase stocks on the top The season
the lack of public enthusiasm the uncer
taintj over the strike situation nnd the
corn crop and the probabllltj that the
monetary situation will not be favorable
to a bull campaign all will tend to make
the market dull and unimportant during
the present month at least
The news was not of a char
acter to have much effect on the market
The strike news was of various hues ac
cording to its source but it is ev ident that
the cempanj is not making gains as rap
idly as the optimistic people of the lilar
trust would liave had the- public expect
The corn crop and general agricultural
news is a shade more hopeful from day
to day and the fear of a corn panic In
the West is beginning to disappear The
officials In general express the
opinion that there will be of busi
ness and that their earnings will com
pare vcrj favorablj with those of the
past jear the largest in up to
the present time London was buoyant
as far as American securities were con
ccrneel jcbterdav but It seems entirely
probable thit the bujlnj there was for
American account and for the purpose of
making the mnrjeet look strong The bank
statement gossip Is not taking definite
form jet but the expectation is that there
will not be the large Increase in loans
this week that there was last and that
therefore the outlook Is for a rather
better statement Monej is still coming
in from the Klondike
St Paul was the etroig stock of the
list all day It was up 2 points in London
and at the opening on this side was well
above the closing price of Tuesday Jt
continued to advance all the morning
reaching 1G4 and better during the after
noon while the general market was
going off it held its own excellently and
at the close Ehoweif d gtKHl net gain for
the day The movement seems to be the
result of manipulation largely and it is
fhrcwdlv Inferred that a considerable por
tion of the floating stock has been cor
nered In much the same way that Jlisv
eourl Faclfic was six months ago It is
known that many shorts have covered
In the stock with loses during the pjft
few- dare during which time the advance
has been nine points more or less The
gossip regarding the stock Is that tho
management intends to put it on a 7 per
cent basis In September There Is no rea
son to believe that this is so at present
although the earnings of the company and
its prospects undoubtedly warrant an in
crease in the rate The stock has been
established on a C per cent basis only a
few months and it will be remembere d
that this first increase was rumored a
long time before It occurred It Is not
conslden el probable by conservative mar
ket people that another advances will be
made in the Fame year On the present
dividend basis with the outlook for an
increase eav carlj ne xt ear the stock
seems to be a cry fair purchase around
its present level on the declines The
earnings of the company during the pres
ent jear should be far In excess of last
jcars record both In gros and net a
the wheat crop will be very large in the
fet Paul States and as the management
promises that the expenditure s for opera
tion can lie curtailed appreciably Irum
the present rate
Atchison common stock was advanced
to above 75 on what was sild to be a
continuance of the Bervvlrd buving
supposed to be for the Pennsjlvania
clliiuc In this instance too the move
ment was obviously a manlpuluted one
to a great extent though some Invest
ment purchises were made The outlook
for the company a verj rosv the ofheera
siv and cnrnlnjrs at present are far
heavier than evrr before The July and
August statements are likely to make a
wonderful showing
Sugar stock was advanced well during
the morninir but later went off again
While the advance was In progress it was
said that the news regarding Sir llave
mevers health was entirely tatlsf ictory
and that the stock h id been yerj much
oversold Dining the break later the over
selling apparently begun ugaln Conserv
ative people rather look for a recovery
in the stock despite Its appearance ot
great weaknem
There Is much bullish gossip regarding
Southern Hallwty common and preferred
Chei apeake and Ohio and Norfolk and
Western It se ems likely th it one pool
may be operating In all of these securi
ties though perhaps the manipulation
comes from two or three sources The
outlook for the stocks Is good and In
vestors who will buj them on the re
actions are not likely to be disappointed
In tlelr movements according to their
friends It Is figured that the Ches ipeakc
nnl Ohio Company Is earning homcthlng
Ilk 5 per cent on the stock nnd that the
Not folk and Western Is earning very
ncuriv If not quite C per cent on the com
mon Hock The pre sent prices of these
securities th refore cannot be considered
high from the strictest Investment stand
point The Southern Italhwiy outlook for
the coming j car with a good cotton crop

and general Southern business booming
Is certainly a good one The Southern

The coalers were distinctly strong
